petite If a CL pup is within someone's budget I'm certainly not going to assume they want to support BYB or are making a poor choice. I work at a vet and see GSDs that were $20 as a pup and $2000 a pup with behavior and medical issues. I would just hope they would be cautious about the environment they are purchasing from. Aside from seeing the whole litter, the parents and the living conditions there are also factors such as how the owners interact with the adult dogs, any signs of parvo, sanitation, so on and so forth.

I personally have a rescue pup who's mother was accidentally bred. She did not have any easy birthing of the pups and within a few weeks of was under our care at the vet. The GSD was so beautiful and sweet even given her condition that once her litter was through being bottle-fed and 10 weeks, I drove out the owner's farm. Only after I was invited to see the litter, the pup's living space, interacting with the mother now that she was healthy and meeting the other animals on the property did I decide to adopt a pup. I knew the lady intended to give them away. I explained to her about bait dogs and other risk of not attaching some price tag but she was moving and I'm not sure if she heeded my warning or not. I try not to think about that and am just thankful I can have one of the pups from the GSD that touched by heart.

I have done too much shelter work to personally justify owning a dog in any other way than rescue. My dogs are companions and I can understand wanting a dog with a good breeding line, it's not a concern for me. Saving a life is.

They get along so well. He is a goof ball, but sometimes even serious dogs need that

So much for "betterment of the breed!!!" I have found a few Breeders with two clear of DM parents,,,not very common however.

Ticking time bombs really...but if you've had a Boxer...

Dogs are like cars not everybody wants the same thing. I had my hear broken two times by BYB in Boxer world! First time the pup lasted two weeks second time took longer DM at 8yrs and my baby girl was gone at 10. So yeah my next Boxer or GSD is not going to be BYB now I know!

But...random bred pup is a relative term? Does a GSD/Mal cross fit that description? People that want them have their reasons. I can kinda see the appeal myself.

My first dog was a mix Gunther BullMastiff/APBT/Lab mix technically he was a Band Dogge but not many know what that is so BullMastiff/APBT/Lab.

He was advertised as a Band Dogge that's what I wanted, I saw the parents and the puppies. It's a cottage industry, Tall and stocky Great Dane?Mastiff mixes or short and stocky APBT/BullDog or other Bully Breed mixes.

I want a Boxer/ABD mix, it looks like basically a Johnson Bull Dog but a Boxer mix imparts a certain "goofiness"pretty sure no one describes a ABD as goofy but that's what I want! Boxers aren't typically used for that specific reason...goofy!

Not a AKC combo so the search is on, pretty much as simple as that... for me anyway.

SARpup Yes I am all for reputable breeders but as has been pointed out........$$$$ Who can afford a pet for that money. I would go to one if I was looking for a working/show dog but not as a pet. (BTW I am not looking for a dog!) I just wanted to see what other people thought. I can't decide either way I think there are chips on each side of the scale! The pup I got was a LITTLE bit older on CL and was not from the breeder, the people said they got him and couldn't keep him. I personally like the little bit older part but the baggage he came with I didn't like so much! That is part of the reason I thought if you went to the source and got the pup at 8 weeks or so (some sell at 6 weeks!) you could eliminate the baggage!
