Food

Doesn't sound good- I believe a switch in food could be beneficial to your pup. Sometimes some brands are just not tolerated well by GSD's, especially puppies, they have super-sensitive digestive systems. I will not attempt to recommend a food here on the forum(a highly- debated subject with owners), but I would say that you can research foods on dogfood advisor.com with good results. A switch could confirm if you may just need a vet consult about the pup's problem. IMHO! Bob

selzer I encourage you to try a different food. Canidae works for some dogs, and it doesn't work as well for others.

Harry and Lola I can remember Harry at a very young age, maybe 18 or 20 weeks with poops like this, I can also remember taking him to a dog park for play with other pups and having to get a bucket of water to wash away his poop because I couldn't pick it up - too watery. I pondered this for such a long time and sought advice from friends and then my local vet, they all suggested a food allergy.

So, I decided to look at chicken first as many people I spoke to advised their dog is allergic to chicken, I gave him the Canidae fish based one and no chicken at all, his poop improved greatly. All was well for a while and then he started pooping badly again, he lost a huge amount of weight and at 2 1/2 years old he looked and weighed the same as a 1 year old.

I took him to a vet experienced with GSDs and she immediately diagnosed him with EPI - his is doing brilliantly now with enzyme replacement and treatment for SIBO (using Tylan) SID (SIBO) - EPI * Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency

Just keep an eye on him for further problems.

Poop changes constantly on the same food.

We started giving our pup Canidae at about 9 weeks of age and he's been on it ever since.. (he's 17 weeks as of today) and his poop keeps changing from like.. a normal looking textured stool.. to kind of mushy.. to super mushy.. to kind of runny, and it keeps alternating between those types. or he'll go poop and it'll start out moist with shape and he'll move to another spot to poop some more and it'll just be runny.. or runny with some pieces (i know, kind of gross).. I've also noticed that he will go through like.. 2.5 big bowls of water in an entire day and he isn't too active (don't like to take him out too much since he's still kind of young and is almost finished with his vaccinations), but we try to get in at least 20-30 minutes a day of fetch or something fun.. I also brought up in a previous thread that he really, REALLY smells like a dog who's been running around outside in the sun even though we gave him a bath about 2 weeks ago.. so I don't know if all these things are contributions of something bigger or maybe I'm just over thinking..

He has a vet appointment this weekend, so I'll bring it up.. but in the meantime, should I maybe swap him to another brand of food? Pumpkin? Yogurt? I'm just kind of not understanding why his poop is constantly different as far as texture and what not. Sometimes it looks fine, sometimes it's just runny and gross.. and he has the worst. gas. ever. Ughghghuhguhg.
