The best idea of his future size is going to come from what size his parents were. Just like with children, there is no sure-fire way to predict how big they'll grow.

Germanshepherdlover2507 I forgot to mention that his front paws are really big too. So does that mean he's gonna be big?

Pax8 Mine is on a mix of Orijen, Acana, and raw. Puppies need lots of calories, but I like to provide more straight meat based calories rather than food that has a lot of oat, rice, or barley because calories from meat will be leaner. A dog who eats foods with lots of oats and rice and such will also get blood sugar spikes because the grain does not break down and release the sugars evenly. I didn't think to tale too many pictures that would indicate body type at that time, so I tried to find the best ones.

It can be hard to tell with him too because he's super fluffy. I usually use the rib test. With your dog facing away from you, put your thumbs on their shoulder blades and run your fingers down the dog's ribcage. On puppies, I can always feel the last two, but can't see them. I recheck it every week and adjust food accordingly.

My phone is being finicky and only letting me upload one photo it looks like. I'll upload more pictures tomorrow if you want.

I keep an eye on my pup's body weight versus their frame more than anything else when they're growing.

There are some charts that people have made, but most pups don't actually fit on them. Mine was about 20 pounds at 4 months which I think the chart said made him a dwarf D: But he's a happy healthy 60 pounds now and still growing!

My best advice is to keep an eye on his body weight and make sure he doesn't get fat. I actually like to keep my pups on the lean side. In my experience, it helps keep them from getting quite so many growth spurts and it keeps them light so their weight doesn't put too much stress on their joints.
What did you feed yours? And do you have a picture of your pup at 4 mos weighing at 20?? I want to see how lean yours was bc mine is lean but idk... I'm the same with the stress on joints as well that's also why I'm asking.

My male GSD puppy weighs 20lbs at 13 week and I also thought it was a little small but the doc said that they don't stop growing till at least a year old. Also he said mine will be more lean, so it may be diff with yours. But 36lbs sounds about right for a 4 month old GSD. Just my opinion though. You can go to google and search GSD weight chart and it'll give you the average weight of pups to adult.
