John C. Just lost our last GSD at age 12. Injured spine. Was operated on and starting to get better, then reinjured spine. Couldn't walk and began to lose control of his bodily functions. The sad thing was that, but for the spinal injury, he was strong as an ox and in great health.

Statistics I've seen are 10-13, with 13 being pretty old. I've heard of a few GSD making it to 15, but I think that's the GSD equivalent of a person living into their mid 90's.

Daisy&Lucky's Mom I currently have three Shepherds ,two are 11 and one is 12.My first Shepherd was 12 and half years old. We lost her to a tomour on her heart. I have been blessed to have mine as long as I have. All of mine are BYB's or came from unknown lines.

asja Mine lived to 13.5 and almost 12, both died of cancer. One had bone cancer, one had hemangiosarcoma. Both came from Germany. The 13.5 was German show lines, the almost 12 was German working lines.

My 9 year old German working line dog is still running around, no HD, no problems so far. I will probably get another dog from the same breeder because she is such a great healthy dog.

Mister C I believe the above posts are accurate.

I had to PTS my dear old Maddie a month shy of her 16th birthday. I never thought she would make it that far. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed her company so long.

I don't know which lines are longer lived. That would be interesting information to have. Maddie was an ASL but we adopted her through PAW (Partnership for Animal Welfare) and were never able to identify her breeder or her lineage.

LaRen616 From what I have seen on this forum it seems the average lifespan is 9-11 years with some making it to 12-14.

Length of life

What should I expect a GSD to live. IS there certain lines that live longer than others with less health issues?
