Ellimaybel Gunther learned sit, shake, and lay down at 8 weeks. He learned to "find mom" at 9 weeks, "help me" at 10. My version of "help me" was to lay on the floor and ask give the command. When he learned to come check on me, I upgraded it to being under a blanket which he would pull off of me and then have been upgrading since to heavier objects. My theory is that if I fall and can't get up he will come pull objects off of me. This has worked amazingly. He figured this out and now when he has freed me of my trappings he grabs my sleeve and tries to pull me to what he perceives to be safety. He's not quite strong enough yet to pull me but he doesn't give up! He also gives hugs, rings bells when he wants out, and goes to the window when told to "go see" or "watch for dad". I'm still working on making him stop barking on command and haven't tried to heel yet because he is never really anywhere on his leash.

sourdough44 That's just great, new pup & all. I'd mostly concentrate with the bonding and potty training initially. Use his name a lot too. Try to limit extended crate time as much as your schedule allows.

FuzzButtMum Oooooh, thank you GRANBYsyztem, those vids are perfect

That's what I thought......start as we mean to go on, as they say! Just the little basics at first.

Cannot wait until monday!!!

GRANBYsyztem oh and congrats on the new pup! Super adorable

GRANBYsyztem Most of the positional training can be very light and not very stressful to the pup even on the first day. You can have him follow a treat into the sit, down, stand positions without, in my opinion, putting much stress on the little guy. And i'd definitely start house breaking RIGHT away. Dont waste any time and/or let him develop bad habits. I feel like every accident in the house just sets you back farther in training.

Really great video for sit, down stand with a FRESH untrained puppy. Goodluck!

FuzzButtMum Thank you K9POPPY I was thinking of letting him settle in for maybe a few days then starting, I want him to get used to his crate first of all, so we'll probably focus on that. Wanted to know what others thought, you're definitely right that it's more each to their own though.

When he's ready, we will be going to "Puppy Playgroup" and then proper training classes.

Puppy comes home

Start training the day you bring the pup home. You will get every kind of suggestion known to man here on the forum. It will be up to you to decide on what suits you and your new puppy.I am sure others have endless advice that will be stated here. I will just share this, just remember that puppies have super-short attention spans(so don't expect miracles at once), and try to make everything exciting and fun!!!! IMHO! Enjoy your pup- Bob

9 week old puppy training...

My pup comes home on Monday!!!! I am beyond excited!

When do you think the right time to train him is? I don't want to bombard him too soon, what age did you start training your pup (basic commands, no biting etc)

Would really appreciate your opinion!
