Chip18 My only advise would be do not do two females in the same household.

A girl and her dog I have a male 1y Chi, neutered recently and a 4m gs/mix. They get along great! I think the larger size of the gs keeps the little guy in check sometimes, lol!

I supervise their play and if I feel it's too rough, I call a halt; they'll stop for a minute then go back to playing. The halt does take it down a notch so it doesn't get too rough. I've also observed that the Chi will let a yelp when he's being hurt and the gs pup will back off for a sec before they go back to playing.

I find that they teach each other their boundaries quite well. I don't interfere until I believe it's too rough. If I notice that the gs is pulling the Chi from room to room by his tail and his play-growls and groans are escalating, and the Chi has a look of "help" in his eyes, I'll stop him. Other than that, I let them play the way they want. I think it's important to let them set their own rules. Like siblings. So, yes, I do let the pup take hold of the Chi's tail or halter and pull or whatnot - as long as no one's being seriously hurt. I think it is important that the Chi understand that this pup has power and he needs to know what the pup is capable of. Otherwise, his 'little dog' mind set will get him into trouble. He has a tendency to be dominant and wants to be the ruler SO bad that he challenges my authority on the regular. And little dogs can get themselves into trouble if they don't understand that bigger dogs can seriously hurt them.

I'm lucky though, my pup is very responsive and listens well, so all it takes is an "hey" from me, and he pauses long enough to let the Chi gain ground. Actually, they both pause.

All of that to say- it can be a good mix but has to be managed and monitored.

I also have a cat and the pup LOVES 'his' cat! He mauls him regularly. The cat tolerates it b/c he's pretty tough and not much phases him, and he also knows he could shred that pup if he wanted to. In fact, as I type this, he was harassing the cat, who in turn brought out the claws and made the pup cry. I'm not sad, or sorry for him one bit

tottie86 We have 2 small Australian silky terriers, both female. We then got our shepherd puppy (who's 9 months now) and they get along great!! Not sure how 3 females would have gotten along though, but the female/male combination seems to be working.

Daisyline I have a small min pin female and our breeder said to get a male. They said the opposite sex will work best because sometimes the same sex will feel the need to compete with each other.

Alice13 When I got my pup, I got a lot of advice to get a female. They said females were less dominant and therefore easier to train. I dunno how true this is but I did get a female n so far I'm having a great time. I dunno about the small dogs though. Never owned one.

I just dnt kno which would be better for my situation a male of a female???would one get along better with a toy breed than the other? Or does it even matter? Both small dogs are male if that matters an r both 1 yr old. An neutered. Please help
