OK, thanks everyone, I'll keep him on it and fingers crossed. It sucks after the issues with WD, I had hoped for a smooth sailing dog. Guess that is hard to find in GSDs. Thankfully I have pet insurance for him but that doesn't take away his pain. Hopefully time does.
I choose not to get the human meds as Metacam for dogs is easier to dose.

|graciesmom||I also used metacam, actually meloxicam the human alternative, for Gracie for years for her HD. Yes, if you can get the vet to give you the prescription, it is much cheaper than the metacam, but you need to watch your dog carefully to be sure that they can tolerate it. It is an anti-inflammatory and you need to give it consistently in order to keep the inflammation down, not just when it gets bad, for it to be effective. Good luck with it.|

One thing that may make you feel better about metacam is that it has a lot of the same ingredients as turmeric. When Cyra got to age 9 with her HD, we starting giving it (she wound up with the 20lb dose) and I figured it a better choice than turmeric because of consistent dosing in the metacam.
For a puppy I would be inclined to spend the extra money because it is easier to control the dosage and take it down to as little as possible. The pills are not guaranteed to be uniform throughout.

Is this what Mrsk's Judge had?
How old is he?

in both forms, metacam is drug whose effectiveness is based on consistent use - like glucosimine....not a drug whose effect is only when ingested - it is not an aspirin...use it as directed..

|JakodaCD OA||it could be from either I suppose, the metacam is for inflammation, maybe ask the vet for some tramadol? which would help 'pain'..|

|wolfy dog||Another question. After resting and getting up, the limp is really bad, then after a few minutes it gets better. Is this a normal symptom of Pano or from the retained cartilage? It is sad to see him like this. I only use the Metacam when he is really bad.|

poor DDog, but glad you have excellent prognosis!
I used metacam for years on one of my gsd's..Actually I switched to meloxicalm (human form of metacam)...it was SOOOOOOOO much cheaper at Walmart I paid 10 bucks for 90 pills which only 1/2 is given daily..If you want the dosage I used pm me..it's very very little..

Through radiographs DDog is diagnosed with "retained cartilage in his wrist joint. When the growth plate closes and the tibia still grows it will affect the position of his foot and surgery will be needed to free the joint. The prognosis is excellent. Just sucks that he was prescribed Metacam. Any healthier alternatives available that you know of?
Anyone have experience with this condition and how did it turn out?
He also has a very slight case of Pano but the limping is not caused by Pano.
