Hmm I think I know the growl and my boy I have only heard that twice. If it's outside his normal behaviour as you seem to indicate. I'm thinking something is there? No idea what it could be but something is there.
Might be a racoon or a cat? Maybe put a leash on him and you both check. He might point in the direction, most likely something he has never heard before?

|lennyb||That's exactly what I do. I'm thinking it may me a animal although I look pretty quick and see nothing ( no cars / trucks / animals / ect.) We live in a suburb and he have a street light out front. Its just that he usually won't do the deep gutteral growl and that's what he's doing.|

|Mary Beth||It could be that your dog hears something (another dog, a certain car or truck especially one that sound like a the mail man or a delivery truck) which he considers a threat. It could even be a cat prowling around. I would do what you are doing - get up and check, but I would make sure to stand in front of the dog to show him that I am in control of whatever is out there. Even open the door and look outside. Then I would yawn (a calming signal) close the door, and walk away like it is no big deal.|

We have a 17 month old neutered male. The last week or so he will start growling at the front hallway or door for no reason and sometimes he will get up to look out the door ( beveled glass door ) This happens at random times and when I check there's nothing there. Happens at least 2 or 3 times a day. No other issues just this. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
