Castlemaid In case anyone runs across this in their puppy search on a website, Schutzhund 3 does NOT mean that the dog has at least three titled working lines in their pedigree. Schutzhund 3 is a TITLE (now called IPO 3), that a dog has to EARN through TRIALS.

Anyone calling themselves a breeder, and sticking a SchHIII onto their dogs' description, and using the made up fairy tale story that the dog is a SchHIII because she has at least three titled dogs in her pedigree is living in some kind of alternate reality.

I know someone with a dog from von Lotta. She's a really nice bitch, great drives, solid nerves, and very nice conformation. I like her a lot. They're getting another dog from them soon and really liked this breeder. They spoke highly of them. Good luck with the new fuzzy gator! And welcome from another Central Floridian!

Freestep It's possible you could buy a pup from this breeder, and it might turn out to be an awesome dog with a great temperament and no health problems. It's also possible you could get a fear-aggressive, nervous, reactive dog with chronic allergies and bad hips. It's a roll of the dice.

It's always a roll of the dice, but you want to stack the odds in your favor as much as you possibly can, by going with a breeder who knows what they're doing, and is doing it for the right reasons. Also, a reputable breeder will stand by their dogs and give support if you have any problems; most provide a guarantee and will take the dog back if it turns out to be a mismatch for your household. Some will even refund your money or give you a replacement pup at no charge.

I personally don't like liars, and representing an untitled, unrated, unshown, unproven, longcoat female as a "TOP VA SEIGER" is a bald-faced lie. I would never want to line the pockets of a person who tells lies in order to sell puppies. If she's willing to shout that lie over the internet for all to see, who knows what other untruths there may be?

If you buy from a BYB, you are supporting them and encouraging them to breed more and sell more questionably-bred puppies. BYBs are one reason why the GSD, as a whole, has a reputation for poor health and temperament. If you're going to spend the money, why not support the folks who care about the breed and do everything they can to preserve all the good qualities that we love?

Shade No, you are not doomed Any dog has odds stacked against and for them, what responsible breeders do is strive to stack the odds in favour of the dog. Any person can take two dogs and breed them, say there are 10 puppies, chances are there may be one good dog in the litter or more. Noone can say with any true certainty that you will get a bad dog.

What we can say is that buying a dog from that breeder and spending that money (which as we all agree is far too much for what you're getting) means that you're lining their pockets and encouraging them to breed again and again. Trust me, I got my poodle from a BYB and while she's a great dog and I don't regret getting her, I know the $400 I paid to that breeder just meant that they could continue to have more puppies and those probably wouldn't end up in homes like mine which were willing to deal with health and mental issues. It doesn't matter whether you hand over $400 or $1500, the money is doing the same thing.

We can tell you not to do it, that doesn't mean you can't obviously. We simply are imploring you to help the GSD continue to be a GOOD healthy and stable dog by going with a good breeder that is striving to maintain them to be just that.

If you want to rescue, that's great. You're giving a dog a home it otherwise wouldn't have, and the money is going towards helping more animals find homes. That is entirely different than walking up to the breeders home and handing them money knowing what they are going to be doing with it.

XeroZeus My last inquiry:

Say that I am just too stubborn to stop myself from purchasing this puppy. There are many people on these forums that have even rescued GSD's and had great success - there are also many that have had bad experiences.

I am not doomed from the get go, most times. I am just not getting the absolute best running start on the whole process. Is this correct?

On another note, I spoke with Betty Miller for about 30 minutes this AM. What a WONDERFUL lady. I wish she were breeding, she is the epitome of a caring owner.
