Southern PA has a higher incidence of HW than northern PA. I only give the meds April thru the first hard frost. Look at your rate in incidence. Look at the recommended preventative (Dr. Dodds website has it).
I do topicals for flea/tick during the same time. Many people don't like the topicals but I've seen what Lyme's can do to a person and I would rather do the Advantix than let an animal go thru that.

|Lucy Dog||You should be testing yearly even with heartworm preventative.|

|JakodaCD OA||I wouldn't do it,,tho I hate putting 'stuff' into my dogs systems, I'd rather give the monthly heartworm med (I do 9 months and test in March/start up again), than pay for heartworm treatment, nor want my dog to go thru that.|

Around here we don't even venture out in the yard early morning or early evening. Mosquitoes are really bad here and there is no standing water or other recepticals where they could breed. It's just flat out bad here.
Lisl is on Trifexis year around and has been since she was six months old.

Kinda depends on where you are. Mosquitoes and standing water are theoretical concepts out here. I haven't seen a mosquito in years??
There are homeopathic prevention I "think " food grade diatomaceous earth is one? But if your in a high risk area I think you need to be pretty aggressive in Mosquito season.

Two other links in there with more info and be sure and look at the Trifexis warning!

Heart worm prevention
What's everyone's opinion on heart worm testing yearly or even every 6 months instead of giving preventatives ?
