blehmannwa Well, I've redone the guest room. Rearranged it and made a pleasant and easily barricaded corner for the rats. They will get more company this way anyway. I managed to arrange it so that the sofa-bed can still pull out and my son can still sleep in there.

We had pet rats when he was a boy. He's always loved pocket pets. I'm looking forward to the rats as well. I'm just at that stage in my prep when I try to imagine everything that could go wrong.

Definitely not overboard! Rats really SHOULD have that sort of environment! They're such intelligent animals, they deserve more than an aquarium.

Mikelia That video was just awesome!
When I had upwards of 50 rats at a time I had a very prey driven gsd who would kill them given the chance. She did manage to bite one of their tails while it was sticking through the bars and degloved it, we had to go to the after hours vet to have the tip removed Other than that we had no issues - she was supervised when around them (I had cages stacked on the floor - multiple huge cages fit better this way haha) and she and my rats lived together for many, many years. They were never let loose when she was out obviously but I would just take them into the bedroom, put the rat blanket over the bed and let them loose. Or put her away when they came out.
I really, really miss having pet rats.

wolfy dog Years ago I trained my group of rats with the clicker. One smartie stole the clicker and took it into her nest as this was an important item that brought her the good stuff.
They are the best pets for kids.

blehmannwa Wolfy Dog!! I had not thought of that absolutely horrifying scenario!! Thank you so much. I have rethought everything and the rats will be living in my guest room rather than laundry room. I have never seen a rat inside of my house but I have seen them adjacent to the laundry room. My son is delighted that they will be in the house and let me just say that my husband is quite cross but I did save his life so there's that. I don't like overnight company anyway.

wolfy dog If your rats are females, they may fit through the bars. Also it is quite common for wild males to impregnate females. And a small male will easily fit through the bars for a visit. They can mate at 5 weeks of age and no peppermint oil will deter them. The offspring is pretty hard to tame.
If yours are mature males you my be able to keep them inside the cage but I wouldn't trust it, especially because of the wild things.
There is a nice rat forum (www.ratforum.com)

blehmannwa I get to name the rats. I'm thinking Fido and Spot.

blehmannwa I asked about the bars and he said that the rats are mature and won't be able to fit through. He'll be obsessively watching them for the first few days and the hardware store is just down the street.

I think that we will need the mesh as I'm aware of just how small a rat can squeeze. We have a problem with wild rats in this neighborhood--sewer and roof--and I've had quite a time getting rid of them. I cut down climbing vines and ivy. I stuffed steel wool into my waterfall rocks. I put oil of peppermint around my shed. I haven't seen any rat sign since November. I can't use poison or traps due to cats and other wildlife.

It's nuts. Pet rats get toys but I scream and freak out about feral rats.
