DonnaKay Mystique will be chipped when she gets spayed. In the meantime, she's wearing a QR code tag.

LeoRose All three of my dogs are chipped and tattooed (tattoo is my SSN). For sure go with the chip (and don't forget to register it), and if he ever needs to go under anesthesia, you can get him tattooed then.

SoCal Rebell Chipping is the easiest way to identify a dog but my last GSD I had both chipped and tattooed.

pyratemom I'd go for the chip as there isn't any national registry for tattoos. Raina has both because she came from Germany with the tattoo and I got her chipped when I got her home. You can register the tattoo with the chip people and that helps identify them along with the chip number.

Shade I agree with going the chip route. I get the vet to scan for the chip whenever they're in to make sure it's working for peace of mind.

Castlemaid I'd go for the chip too - fast and easy. I did get an ear tattoo for my rescue, but it was done while she was under for her spay.

Jax08 Microchip. There is no solid way to identify a tattoo if he gets lost. My understanding is a tattoo is to identify the breeder and litter. My Seger has a tat but I still chipped him in case he ever got lost.

lhczth At his age I would go with the chip.

Ear Tattooing

So we have rescued Buster (formerly named Jake, but as I am named Jake we opted to change it to Buster). He is a purebred Shepherd, but his former owner did not opt to "pay for" his papers. He turned a year old in December, was chained to a porch most of his life and came to us twice when he ran away so we called and "acquired" him from his owner. We love him to pieces, he's learning the rules and his commands well, walking on a leash twice a day, had a vet check and (after an ear infection we knocked out) he's very healthy. I was wondering what y'all's thoughts were on chipping vs tattooing. I am more on the tattooing side at this point but would like some input. Thanks everyone!
