cherylden Hi Anne,

Thank you for your reply! I will actually go back to Singapore. I guess I really do not need personal protection trained dog in Singapore anyway. I thought I'd need one while living in The United States, but I will be here only for 2 to 3 years.

If I may ask one more question, so does it mean that I have to be present initially when the gardener or pool guy or any guest visit to acknowledge my approval? If not, will the approval of other household member is ok?

I would definitely invest in stable and healthy pup.

Thank you!

MaggieRoseLee Most important thing is to get a stable healthy dog. So make sure you read up on --> http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...ind-puppy.html

I wouldn't worry about all the extra money, time and CONTINUED training a protection dog would need. Just having a big scary LOOKING GSD that will bark should be more then enough to keep your friends family safe and strangers away.

zyppi Welcome.

I lived in Singapore for three years.

You're dog will know you and accept those you approve of. He/she will mature and be protective of your territory.

You act as primary trainer and supplier of attention and sustenance and pup will know you no matter who takes care of him for interim periods.

Would not go for personnel protection training unless you're experienced handler. Just the presence of a GSD in the household is a deterrent.

You want a stable pup. Socialize well, train the basics and he will be more than you can imagine.

Concentrate on finding a breeder knowledgeable about health and temperament. Ask where pups from previous litters are now and what the current owners are doing with them. Ask for numbers, and call. Ask for veterinary information.

Be ready to devote time, attention and $$$ to this pup. Skimping on initial price or vet care is not wise.

I'm not an expert, just have had one or two GSDs in my household for many, many years. I'm still learning.

Good luck

First time!

Hi, i'm Cheryl. I am considering getting a GSD puppy and plan to get proper training and maybe personal protection training. There are some concerns that I have and I am going to look through this forum for some answers, but I'd appreciate it if anyone wants to chip in and answer some questions here!

- I will have to bring the dog back to southeast asia where I live in a couple of years or so. We have 2 live in helpers who would spend a lot of time with the dog during the day.

- Would it be a problem if I travel for work every once in a while for 1 or 2 weeks and leave the dog at home.

Specifically relating to protection training, I don't understand how the dog will understand between guest and intruders? I might have visitors visiting my place even when i'm home, so I am a bit concerned.

Note that I am trying to be a responsible owner, and I might not even get one if my living arrangement as I stated above is not suitable for a GSD. So I am looking for some opinions out there that could help me.

Thanks!
