Chicagocanine I don't know, for me we always had a cat or cats first, then got our dogs, or else we got kittens who were then raised with our adult dogs who already lived with cats. I think it's best to get them used to cats when they are young.

Kayos and Havoc I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. I have added cats and kittens to the gang with puppies.

The no chasing rule is always in effect. You can start teaching your puppy a leave it now and when it is reliable start looking for a cat or kitten. If you go with a rescue organization instead of a shelter you might be able to have them help you find an appropriate cat or kitten that has been exposed to dogs already.

We also put our kitten in a large wire dog crate when we were not able to supervise closely so she was not inadvertently stepped on or injured by a dog. Sadly this cat that was a kitten 13 years ago is now dying of cancer.

Chip18 Yep I know, meant to add a note but I forgot, It's just additional info and stresses the importance of no chasing! Basically cat comes to the dog,if he wants to not a problem for a kitten!

JenniCB Thanks for the link. I've seen a few articles like that. My situation would be the opposite though. Introducing a cat to a home with a dog.

Chip18 Well I'm down to 9 cats and 1 dog my all time high was 12 cats and 3 dogs. My guys were/are cat proof and my motto was simple the dogs don't chase the cats every!

Having said that, an older cat that is used to dogs would be at less risk of inadvertent injury with a puppy. A smaller kitten is going to be kind of fragile and any inter action would have to be watched for awhile.

In any case I would apply the same general rules, let the cat come to the puppy, don't let the puppy chase the cat! Small furry things running fast can kick in prey drive.

So just error on the side of caution, cat comes to the puppy, let them play but no full out ripping through the house chasing. Just do that with a kitten for a week or two and then they'll most likely be best buddies and play all the time.

Could we get a new kitten?

Hi All,

We have a 4 1/2 month old full on puppy called Penny. At some point in the future we would like to adopt a new cat or kitten. Would this be a disaster? Would we be better with a cat that the shelter says is used to dogs or a kitten that could grow up with Penny. Would it be better to do this whilst Penny is younger or wait till much later?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jennifer
