barnyard I'm not sure exactly what level of protein is too high but some of the Nutrisource foods aren't too high in protein. Costco's Nature's Domain Salmon is 24%. Annamaet has one that is 23%. Ideal Balance is around 21%.
Some of the senior and large breed foods tend to be lower, too.

Mary Beth I feed Solid Gold Barking at The Moon - that is high in protein, though they have other kinds that may be low. For her coat, I would suggest supplementing with coconut oil (zero protein) - 2 T. a day.

diet and shedding/skin issues

Our GSD is 2 years old in March. I am trying to get some suggestions as far as diet/ brands of food to try. We started her off on purinena pro plan as a puppy and changed over to Blue Buffalo after about 9 months since we heard wonderful things about that brand. Her skin and coat looked amazing, but shortly thereafter we were told BlueBuffalo is high in protein and she has borderline elevated kidney values ( she has since 4 months old). We then changed to Iams and she seems to do ok on that brand ( kidney values have actually fallen back into the "high" normal range) but she seems to get bored with the flavor every few months and we have to alternate. This past month I noticed she has had a lot of shedding....take into account the heat has been on etc, but when I groom her it seems like more than usual. Her coat also seems to be a bit more dull than before.

Can anyone give me some ideas of what brand dog foods they use? ( low protein). I would love to have more options and try something that would be healthy. Thank you!
