I wouldnt worry just yet. Every dog is different it seems from reading the threads here.
At about 9 months or so Dex started alerting at the front door. Before that he was quite content with leaving it up to the maltipoo to bark his little head off. Dex would just sit there wagging his tail. Now, if someone comes to the front door, my maltipoo will bark constantly but the Dex will bark once or twice. Since I have college age kids we have alot of vistors. Dex thinks only good things come through the front door.
The back yard is a different story. He will run the whole length of the fence barking if he hears a noise back there. Mostly cats and possums (the backyard he started barking at around 6 months). whats funny is the maltipoo used to do night time rounds in the backyard until we got Dex. Now the maltipoo is content to stay on my lap and let Dex take care of the backyard. Maybe they have some sort of pact going on.

|Oisin's Aoire||My male started alerting to people on the property at about 4 months old ( a week or so after I got him ) ..but I also have two other large dogs who are VERY protective of the property and us so he may have just picked up on their cues. Now at 10 months he is definitely aware of his property and people. He barks , and is anxious to check out people , see what they are all about.|

|gaia_bear||My 6 month old barks when my older female does but he has no clue why he's barking thou. He will sit in the window and watch the normal going-ons but no signs of guarding, he's fairly suspicious and serious at training so I'm sure it will come, if it doesn't oh well.|

Just wondering at what age have you noticed your puppy starting to bark and warn you that someone is in your yard or at your door? Our Heidi is 10 months old today and shows no sign so far of being a watch dog. I can not remember when our other shepherd started.
