Kayos and Havoc OP, I think you will be just fine with Hera. Trust has been broken and now must be restored but it is very possible with a bit of time.

I too would move the crate and change the bedding. I am not sure I would carry her outside while in the crate. One it will be heavy and I know I would be afraid of dropping it. I am also a 56 year old, 120 pound lady. I would also be afraid the movement of the crate may frighten her.

Dogs are social animals. I'm not saying any different.

I urge you to read the book. I'm not going to type it all out here for you.
David,
I am not disagreeing with your statements. I am curious, what is the difference between social and pack behaviors? I think there are related. Maybe people have different meanings for "pack" and "social".

Bridget Sounds like you have gotten some good advice. Don't be too hard on yourself; humans snap sometimes, it could happen to anyone. Go forward.

Blanketback OP, it sounds like the issue is occurring when you let Hera out in the morning, so what about letting her sleep in the bedroom with you? This will change the whole pattern for her, and hopefully put an end to it. My pup had some excitement urination going on at the same age - the only thing to do was to ignore it when it happened. And try to avoid the situations that seemed to bring it about.

MadLab Dominance theory and dogs forming a pack are 2 different things.

David Winners I'm not even going to argue.

I suggest you do some research.

Here's a good book based on scientific facts.

Dominance in Dogs - Fact or Fiction

I dare you to read it.

dpc134 I would carry her crate (with her inside) to the location where she typically pees and then let her out until her confidence is built back up. It won't take long before she is exiting her crate with her tail wagging, just give it time.
Don't worry too much about what you did. We all make mistakes. Harsh (physical) corrections on a puppy are not good, but it will not destroy them to the point of no return. Continue working on friendly play with her and her confidence in you will continue to grow.

Submissive urination is an involuntary response to insecurity and fear. Therefore rewarding or punishing it, is useless.
Here's what I would do to break up the cycle:
_ get a different type of crate, a new bed/blanket and put it in another location.
_ approach the crate, and her in it, sideways, avoid eye contact and everything excitable, and make yourself small next to the crate, open it and let her come out without paying attention to her. Let her follow you outside and keep things calm.
I am glad you saw what you did wrong, we have all goofed up one way or another.

Dogs don't form packs in the wild.
They do. Ask any sheep farmer. Dogs form packs and kill sheep. Your lovable pouch is a different animal when in a pack and free in the wild.

To me it is basic, put 10 dogs together and they are gonna exhibit pack behaviors. Where does the expression of a pack of dogs come from?

Also friends of mine in dog rescues are very aware of dogs packing up and killing newbies.
