drose4dj MB good idea on cutting the tips. I don't have little ones, just teens. Hoping it's just her coat changing. But thanks everyone for your input. My Aspen is a very healthy girl and gets regular vet visits, so I'm not to worried, was mostly curious if anyone had seen the discoloration before in other GSD's.

huntergreen if it was my pup when my kids were still in high chairs, i would guess chocolate pudding.

Mary Beth I wonder if she leaned against something like wet paint or some type of dye that transferred or even a deck that had cresote since it is just on the tips. Now, it could still be the hair as my Sting has and my husky had (but not my aussie) hair that is just dark on the tips otherwise white. This is usually more predominant with the winter coat - so my Sting looks darker in summer. But it is not in spots. Also your dog is young and I think the coat color could still be changing. I would do an experiment and trim the hair on one of the spots (just a small area) then see how it grows back. If it grows back all one color, then I would think that it was some type of dye transfer. If it grows back the same, then her coat is changing. I guess I wouldn't worry since she doesn't have fleas and she isn't chewing on it and she is healthy.

drose4dj It's in the hair, noting on the skin. She's not biting, no fleas or other pests to speak of. She's an indoor dog, mainly as well.

carmspack tried my best to get a good look but can't see if it is the colour of the hair changing or the colour of the skin underneath from a dog scissoring - flea biting himself and leaving damaged skin or a surface bruise. From the quality of the picture it looks like there were spots before that have healed as they are less pigmented . The coat , in the picture , gives the impression that it is breaking off? very curious

Spots in Coat (on front shoulder?)

I have googled and searched, and have not been able to locate an answer. My one year old over the last few weeks has developed these black, freckle type spots on her coat. They are fur discolorations at the tips of the hair, appearing like spots as a whole. Does anyone know if this is normal?Attachment 149354
