llombardo I went with a 6 ft vinyl, no one has attempted to come in or out. Well except for a squirrel that comes under and runs for dear life when the dogs come out.

Sp00ks Not to sound like a jerk but ours knew not to leave the fence. We could leave the gate open and she wouldn't pass the threshold of the fence. In fact, there is a part of the fence that was old privacy that is all but rotten away that I need to fix before the pup comes.

However, I would never leave her in the yard when we were not home. If she stayed outside for any amount of time without us, we would check on her every 20-30 minutes. Most times she was sunning on the deck or chasing lizards.

If I were to leave her outside when we aren't home, I would put up a kennel with a roof of some sort. Her job is to protect the house when we aren't home so that would sort of be counter productive.

Yes, I have had escape artist Shepherds in the past. Climbing a 6' cattle fence. I had to put the fence about 1' in the ground and fenced about a foot at the top horizontally so she couldn't climb out. That was more of a large pen than a fenced yard though. She was destructo with separation anxiety. I could not leave her in the house. She ate through a door once.

doggiedad you put extentions on the fence that lean inward.

JanaeUlva If you get the hot wire up before they learn to jump the fence they most likely try to climb first, touch the wire and they are usually no longer interested in getting over the fence. If they already know to jump out then the hot wire might not work. And then you might have a bold dog that will attempt to jump the wire because they can't climb out. But I myself have not had that happen and will cross that bridge if I ever come to it.

boomer11 i wouldnt trust a 4ft fence either. unless you own a 120 pound fat shepherd, it could easily clear a normal fence. i'd look into an electronic fence or at least an 8 ft fence. my theory is anything that you can jump over, a shepherd can definitely jump over.

doggiedad pet fencing, is that special fencing?? research in your area where
you can buy fencing. i wouldn't trust a 4' fence.

Mikey von My past two GSDs would easily clear a 6' fence. Kaya, the more athletic one, would get over 8 footers in her younger years. We now live in the sticks just outside of town, we are in the process of installing a radio fence for Kimber.

TAR HEEL MOM Hot wire? Explain please I never leave my guys in the fenced dog yard when I leave the house (even for a few minutes) because I live in fear that Tar will finally figure out how easily he could jump my 4' fence I have wisteria planted all along the new sections and when it grows in good it adds a leafy bushy foot or two to the fence, but that may take a while.
