I usually try to keep my postings Athena-centric or at the very least GSD-centric, but I've been struggling with sadness over the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard. Three years ago, I worked in that exact building, one floor above where the shooting started. Our contracting firm still has team members at that location on the 5th floor who heard/smelled the gunfire and managed to escape. I've worked with my team members in some cases for years, so it would have been devastating to lose any of them.
The government personnel who are our customer lost coworkers and friends. I knew by acquaintance at least one victim, others I recognized from their photos.
Our city is reeling, just like every city that has suffered a senseless mass shooting or other orgy of violence--and I think of my friend/coworker Pam of over 10 years who was saved that day by deciding to answer her phone to help her customer, rather than go down for her breakfast at 8:10am like she did every day. Some weren't as lucky, and I grieve for them.
I hate that this happened, but we're DC Strong. We'll get through this.
