There are rules for equipment though. Here's what we pull under:

Wow that's really cool and interesting. Thanks for the info. Have you ever been part of the crew, I don't know how to describe it, that is in charge of checking the cart? Seems like there is a ton of variables that could effect overall equality of pulls. I'm guessing the guidelines are pretty strict?

Cart on natural surface (wheels):
Cart on carpet (wheels):
Rails - this is where you usually see the highest weights because there is less friction:
Snow - this is the only type where a sled is used:
Depending on what organization you pull with, you will only have some of these options. We have done wheels/natural and wheels/carpet. Our organization also offers snow pulls, but they are a long drive for us.

This is a complete noob question but... Why does it have wheels?

We went to our second pull on Sunday. Otis set a new personal best pulling 2,325# (more than 34 times his weight). That's his 2nd leg towards his Working Dog Superior title.
This photo is his failed attempt at 2,550# (my hand on his collar is a DQ, I went in to help him so he finished on a positive).

You're right, the K9 Jym would be perfect to go see! That's where we go for some of our weight pull events. I believe they held a rally trial on the same day as a weight pull last year, and I was so sad I couldn't get away to watch some.
Oakes would be a good option too! I see they have an AKC event on Nov. 15th. I have to be at the Expo Center for one of the events over that weekend. Maybe I'll catch the tail end of things!

Aw man, I am sorry I didn't see the map.
re: Rally trials, you can see upcoming dates/locations here: RallyDogs - What's Happening
I'm doing the one at Kellars Canine Academy (which is right outside NYC) on 10/13 (not the 12th though because that's the day foster dog is arriving), then the Wednesday night trial at BVTC outside Harrisburg on 10/23, then maybe the 11/2 one at K9Jym in Colmar that Oakes K9 Training is holding.
I'm not sure about that one, though, because the K9Jym trials always draw a bazillion entries (their last trial had over 60 teams entered in Level 1 alone) and last year's Halloween trial took about 11 hours to get through. Plus there's a costume party break in the middle, and while that's fun, it adds another hour and a half to the day.
Honestly, it's probably going to come down to whether I have a good enough book to keep myself entertained throughout the day, and how badly I want to finish Pongu's ARCHEX this year. I just don't know if I'm going to have the stamina to get through such a huge day, given that so far none of my Rally friends are planning to do that one.
But that would be a good one to go to if you want to see a Rally trial and don't want/have to stick around for the whole day. The Oakes trials are usually fun and lighthearted, and they draw a widely varied crowd, from people participating in their first-ever dog event to longtime agility and obedience competitors. That's also about as close a venue as you'll find to Philly.

Haha. The collar fabric was on clearance from Collarmania and I needed a martingale for him. It's the only one for him so he wears it year round. It's also the only sturdy collar that matches his harness!
Boo. I sent you a PM back with a map and everything. I've never been to that particular location (I couldn't make it either - it was their first time there).
Yep, dog stuff takes up all your free time! Good luck at the rally trials! Are they nearby? I wanted to go watch one.

Nice pictures! Is that a Halloween collar?
re: lure coursing -- uh, maybe? I looked through my pms and I sent the last one on 9/2 (after I totally failed to find the place because I'm colossally un-gifted at both driving and navigating) but if there was a response, I didn't get it.
I missed last weekend because of book deadline stuff but I'm hoping to be able to go sometime in the second half of October. Depends on the exact dates, though -- I have a Rally trial one weekend (and new foster dog arriving), then it's the IPO championships, then there's one free weekend (unless I spend that doing adoption events in an attempt to hock the foster dog), and then it's either Rally again or a seminar at my training club (haven't decided yet which I'm going to do).
November is, somehow, even worse.
Dog stuff! It will devour your entire life!
