9 month old GSD pup - scared of other dogs
My girl Sascha is very scared of other dogs.
We socialised her and her 9 month old Husky brother with some of our friends dogs when they were a lot younger, but we live out in the country so they rarely are put on a lead or around other dogs - I appreciate this is probably half of my problem.
Having taken them both to a dog park a few times in the past month, as soon as she catches sight of another dog she will bark and bark. Her bark is very aggressive sounding and the owners and dogs seems to misconstrue this for aggression instead of fear, and they turn the other way.
If a dog does run up to her while she is barking or we walk past some dogs, she will hide behind me.
She is absolutely fine with people and is such a sweetheart. She is so shy with dogs that even if she just SNIFFS another dog I give her lots of praise as that is a big thing for her!
I have organised a puppy play date with someone from work this weekend (he has a rescued female GSD who from memory is a couple of years old). She is a beautiful, lovely girl. His dog is also a little shy of other dogs but she does not bark like Sascha does. I thought that it would be a good match since his dog won't be all over Sascha.
I have spoken to a dog trainer who said to watch for where the invisible boundary is where her mouth closes and ears prick up and then to step backwards and gain her eye contact and give her a treat for calming down and forgetting about it.
I'm super excited for Sascha this weekend as I'd love to make some progress and for her to make some friends.
Can anyone please tell me if I'm making a grave mistake getting 2 dog-scared dogs together with one another??
