Yeah, I had left him out just a few times before and he did perfect. Don't know what happened the last two times lol. But you know the first time he chewed the carpet my husband had left for a week on the ship he's stationed on, the second time he was also gone on he ship for about two weeks. I wonder if there was some sort of connection. He loves my husband to death!
When my husband comes home from work Ruger is so excited to see him and just gets really hyper. He talks to my husband and whines, sometimes pees lol but that's only if he hasn't been out before my husband gets home. It usually takes him a few hours to calm down, and even after a 30-40 minute walk. When my husband comes home from being gone over a week I make him stand out side while I let Ruger out of his crate in case he has an accident.

Sometimes it's hard to know when they can be trusted out.
My dog has been really good, I'll just leave her for maybe an hour or so (she's a year and a half now), but lately she's started pulling my door stopper out of the wall. You know one of those spring ones? It's no big deal, I can just thread it back in, but Bitter Apple etc, nothing seems to deter her. I tried taking it off completely, but naturally she hit the door and the handle bashed the wall
It's the only thing she's done, well I have to make sure I don't leave things like pens laying around on the coffee table, but mostly she'll leave everything alone...but not quite everything Ha ha
So close...yet so far!

Lol, I left him like less than 20 minutes. I'm pretty sure my Corgi helped. She never starts trouble but she'll sure help out. I'm not upset about the carpet any more, found out there's hardwood flooring underneath the carpet, so we're probably just going to rip it all up. It would be prettier than the carpet any way lol.
Ruger is our first GSD, but not my first large dog. He just grew so quickly! I still suspect he has more growing to do since his feet are still quite large for his body.

Yeah, I can't imagine having a puppy, because my GSD is 2 years old and mostly acts like a 5 month old. I got him when he was 18 months old and since he spent so much time in a kennel, I'd say his social development was/is lagging pretty far behind. He has come a long ways, but is definitely a work in progress. I know many of them don't fully mature mentally until age 3 or 4, but right now I've got an 80 lb. "little" puppy, lol.
Sounds like you are doing an overall great job with your pup. Guess I need to get mine a t-shirt that says "Chronologically I'm 2 but mentally I'm 5 months"

|Lucy Dog||You're definitely expecting too much from a 5 month old puppy. I've got one that's almost 5 months and he'd destroy the house too if I left him alone out of the crate.|

Think you are actually looking at this the right way. Sometimes we need reminders that they are still puppies and we need to not speed up their growing more than it already is.
Just continue to use the crate and have fun!

I found I did the opposite more, I expected him to act like a puppy and he started acting more like a dog just with puppy brain moments.
Hang in there, it really does get better. Keep up the training and keep expectations reasonable, even now at 19.5 months Delgado is only being left unsurpervised for only 1-2 hours at a time and slowly working from there.

Expecting To Much
I am having the most difficult time with my five month old, and it's not his fault. He's so big I forget how young he really is. Yesterday I left him out with my Dix year old Corgi, to run up to the store, came home and he tore up the carpet by the front door. I was so mad but I should have put him in his crate. He's very smart, ready knows sit, down, stay, go get it, find it, and speak. And he is amazing with my one year old daughter. I couldn't be more happier with the way he's turning out to be.
But I just expect so much from him because he's so BIG! Maybe I should get him a t-shirt and write "I'm 5 months old" on it so when I look at him I will be reminded he's still a puppy.
