I think the OP meant Petland is looking run down.
btw- on topic...I will not, refuse to, won't spend even a penny at Petland because they sell "AKC" puppies at the store near us. I don't think I could remain calm in one of those stores because of it.

|Gharrissc||I haven't seen a Pet Land in YEARS but do remember some not so good practices from a couple of them I've gone into. I know they were trying to push their franchise opportunity really hard several years ago and didn't even know they were still around today.|

|TAR HEEL MOM||
My shelter works with PetCo and also PetSmart. We take some dogs to PetCo every other Friday and we go twice a year to a huge Mega-Adoptathon at PetSmart. PetSmart also does awesome grants for spay/neuter programs.
We currently sign up all cats for free and all dogs over 40 pounds for free thanks to PetSmart.
This weekend is the huge multi-agency Adoptathon at PetSmart in Asheville, NC. There will be hundreds of dogs there. If you are in the area, stop by!!

I wouldn't set foot in the Petland in my area - I'm thinking it has been shut down. Several years ago they used to draw quite a few protesters every weekend. We now have a similar store called PetORama. Awful place. Awful people.
We have a horrid 'mom and pop' store called Adams Feed Store. They have a constant supply of visibly sick, puppy mill puppies. They constantly get their animals taken away from them, but will have more in a week or so. A friend of mine donated a reptile of hers to them (not knowing what kind of place it was) after she moved and was forced to get rid of him, he was sick within a week.
Petsmart is alright here, they still go through local shelters for their cats, and only have dogs on set adoption days - Also from shelters. They've even given me a list of the shelters they pull their animals from (I found a stray kitten and was hoping to slide him into Petsmart). Same with our Petco.
Though i'm a little less happy with some of both of their practices with their reptiles.

We don't have a PetLand here. Just a few PetSmarts around us.
Puppy mills tick me off to no end as it is. Other businesses helping provide them a market just makes it worse. I hope people are out letting other people know not to purchase pets from these places.

I think she meant PetLand.
Our PetLand here only has shelter animals....but as early as 3 years ago sold puppymill dogs.

|Galathiel||Our Petsmart is still adoption/rescue central for local organizations. Petland however... ugh. I was seriously upset about it. No, I asked an employee as you could obviously tell that they are all 'pure breed' puppies. They had a husky puppy, a bulldog, a couple of yorkies and some others. When I asked the employee if they were carrying AKC puppies now she said 'AKC, ACA and APRI puppies", and I guess she could tell from my expression that I was aghast and assured me that the breeders are USDA inspected. I didn't even want to get into it so I turned and walked out after muttering yeah a lot of large scale commercial operations are.|

Are you sure?
Our PetSmart keeps cats and occasionally dogs for the Humane Society. They are rescues.
Sorry, but I really hope you were mistaken. That would seriously tick me off if they started helping the blasted puppy mills.

Disappointing Development at Our Pet Store
We don't have any mom/pop types pet stores here in our town, just Petsmart and Petland. I usually go to Petsmart for my purchases as Petsmart is looking a little run down. I stopped in there this week because I was in the market for a new fish for one of my aquariums. I went in and they had done a little remodeling and had expanded their food section. I was so happy to see they are now selling Fromm foods. I didn't want to use them before because I preferred to get something that I could also obtain locally in case there was a gap if I decided to order online and it didn't come in before my current bag was emptied.
However, as I walked around the store and made it back up near the front, instead of the usual rescues from the local SPCA which is what they had gone to some years back, they have now gone back to selling AKC, ACA, APRI puppies instead. I was so disheartened by that. Here I thought pet stores were getting away from that, not returning to it! Ugh. Now I don't want to buy food from them either. There goes my Fromm *sigh*.
