His ulcers are just on the skin of his belly, tail, legs, etc. Seemingly random locations. His rectum is just red and itchy. They checked for fistulas, swollen glands, etc and that he doesn't have.

Hi Ken and WELCOME!
Did the vet say that these "ulcers" were called Perri-anal Fistulas?

Advice for itchy GSD with lots of derm problems?
Hi GSD forums,
I found this site a bit out of desperation. We have a very lovely 5 yo GSD (50% American, 50% german) named Felix. This is our first GSD and, he's lovely, but a medical mess. Beginning about age 3 he developed a very itch bottom. He would lick it incessantly. This progressed to skin ulcers which he would bite and they would become infected. We've taken him to our vet many times and drove for > 1 hr to take him to a vet dermatologist. Antibiotics and high dose steroids are about the only thing that works but it's not healthy for the dog and now they are suggesting strong immune suppressant, which is expensive (which I don't mind if he's more comfortable) and also seems excessive and unhealthy.
Observing him for a while I thought he might be gluten intolerant so I tried him on gluten free kibble and that worked for about a month and then his symptoms returned. We've had him on allergy shots x 1 year, and that didn't help at all. We put cream on his bum x several months....which he seemed to really like btw....but his skin spots progressed. What I'm trying to say is we've tried everything that a caring parent should try but nothing has helped.
Any suggestions from this group? Is this a GSD issue and I'm missing something important? Thanks!
