make sure the tether is away from fences and tables so he cant jump and hang himself. this place makes really good sturdy collars for pit bulls that are mostly kept outside tethered and his prices are good Stillwater Kennel Supply -- The Best Pit Bull Collars
you can do a chain set up or a cable, depending on what you are looking for.
for tethering set up go here Official Pit Bull Site of Diane Jessup
i used these methods for my dog when i had to have him tethered outside until our fence was up

why can't your dog stay inside? if i were going to leave a dog
outside, unsupervised, i would build him a kennel.

|Robinson||ok and why i would prefer cable or chain vs a kennel in a safe environment (fenced backyard) is that 10' chain = 314 sq ft and 12x12 kennel = 144 sq ft|

|nhstadt||I do not have a fence at my current residence, so I also use a tie out for SHORT periods of time (not more than half an hr at a time in the summertime during the day). I'd recommend a good strong cable with a shock absorbing spring you can get at a pet store, not a chain. The chain gets tangled easier, and doesn't straighten itself out when the pressure is released off of it. Also a Strong, screw type anchor point you can also get at the pet store. My dog pulls out the hammered in ones. Also most people forget, but the absolute widest leather collar you can get with a metal buckle. This will keep your dog from hurting his/her neck if it lunges or runs to the end of the line and doesn't stop, as well as keep it from breaking the buckle. I've got a 2 inch wide metal buckle collar I use on my dog after the 1 inch nylon plastic buckle collar I had snapped in half at the buckle when my dog chased the UPS truck to the end of the line.|

Make sure there is a swivel hook on the end also.
Why not buy a kennel or crate him inside?
