If there is a Costco near you, I've had really good experiences with the Kirkland brand.
I fed my GSD Orijen for a few months and also Acana, and while she did fine on it, I never felt that there was a difference from when she was on other decent kibble like California Natural or the Kirkland. Eventually after almost a year, I ended up just switching back to Kirkland.
Maybe every dog is different. I have a Pom in the family that we saw a HUGE difference going from a decent kibble (Natural Balance) to a better kibble (Wellness Core). Her coat became absolutely amazing...it was literally night and day as she was already 4 years old by then, and all of a sudden I don't see her for a few months and I see this huge difference in her coat.
Might just be that the GSD fur doesn't show it as much. Her muscle/weight was the same between mid-tier and top-tier.

My family's old mutt tried Wellness Core on my advice (he lives with my parents) and despite being a total chow-hound he didn't like the taste or texture of it. After the first few days of novelty he would only eat it every other day or so when he was so hungry he had no choice. No idea why; the bag was in-date but it did smell a bit stale to my dad, so that might have been the issue.
I used to feed Canidae and loved it. We sold a lot of it when I worked in pet supply and never saw a bag returned.

Thanks for the replies.
Anyone have experience with Wellness Core? From looking at their website it appears they make the food themselves, but anyone know otherwise?

I had my GSD on Canidae for 5 years until they had the recall a year or two ago. He did very well on it! Canidae used to be made by their own factory but then they contracted it out to Diamond Pet Foods. Diamond Pet foods makes soooo many of the brand name foods but the South Carolina facility has had more than a fair share of recalls involving one brand or another. I've been feeding Orijen since then.
I don't have any food suggestions but my point is that you want to really, really know who's making the food. There's no guarantees but in my book, anything made by Diamond Pet Food Co. is off my list.

Trying to decide on a food - Canidae?
We just got our new 9-month old pup this past week. His previous owner had him on Iams, which I want to get him off of for a better food. I contacted his breeder who recommends Orijen or Acana, but I can't afford either of these at the moment.
In looking for an alternative I came across Canidae All Life Stages, which I can either get locally or through my Amazon Prime membership at a cost I can afford. Also considering Wellness Core Grain Free Ocean Formula.
Anyone have experiences to share or advice?
