|Nigel||I think if you are petting him while or shortly after he is barking, you are reinforcing the behavior. Ranger barks like this too, the only thing that works is for me to stand close by and say quiet. If he quits, then I reward him with treats or attention. It's still a work in progress for us.|

2+ year old GSD excessive barking.
Hercules is constantly barking at anyone who walks past the house or any of the neighbors who go outside their house to just walk around. It seems like anyone he can see from our house he will bark at. It is not a nice bark either I can see his hair sticking up on his back. The barking will stay constant for a few minutes then stop with him running around anxious for a few minutes. I tried to keep him calm by petting him saying good job... but hes so anxious. It seems like anytime someone walks by with a dog its a lot worse than someone walking around. If I have him on the leash walking him he could care less about people or dogs.. I am guessing it is just a territorial thing. Im sure this is my fault with the training, I just do not know what I should do to make him stop excessively barking. Its great that he is protective but its a little excessive. Any tips?
