I confess, I watched it. All I could think was "Oh good GAWD.
To me it was like watching a car crash, you KNOW you shouldn't watch, but you do anyway. I must say that was one of the corniest things I have EVER seen. BUT it was nice to see the folks doing something with their dogs. Though it was obvious that more than one of the dogs HATED it. It would be nice if THOSE folks either used a different dog, OR did something that the DOG enjoyed instead.

Yeah, I think they showcased a lot of the more. . .creative handlers than the others. Some of those outfits were absolutely ridiculous. I am not that overboard when I do freestyle.
I think it only looks corny when you haven't done it. Granted, I didn't even WANT to do it with Risa initially. I thought it was stupid. But it was the only activity our trainer was offering at the time (and in MT, we only had one trainer choice) so I decided to give it a shot. When you do it right, it's a lot of fun for both you and the dog. It allows you both to be creative and still 'play by the rules.' I think it's also a good starter activity for other venues like agility, rally, or obedience. It doesn't have to be wacky and goofy but it seems that that's the portion Animal Planet chose to cover. Most of the freestylers I know are far more grounded than that. |

Very cool. I have a friend on another board who knows the breeder of the Newfie, Rollo. One of the Golden Retriever owners lives here in Stamford. It's possible we'll be meeting up with the local freestyle group so perhaps we'll get to meet them.
I guess Ris and I are doomed to be the nerds of dogdom since we enjoy the silliness of freestyle. We can't do obedience (I do not trust her in long stays around other dogs). Rally is a possibility but neither of us enjoys it that much. We can never get into agility no matter how hard we try (either we're in an area with no classes or my work schedule gets in the way). So I guess we'll just stick with something fun that we can get involved with. Even if it's just freestyle. |

I love watching freestyle, it's a lot of fun! I've never seen dogs that didn't enjoy it, but I missed the special on Animal Planet. I've attended a few seminars, got a video (Rhythmic Paws) and a book, and trained my Golden some moves. However I am not coordinated enough to remember to direct my dog AND look like I'm "dancing" at the same time so we never competed.

LOL.
I wouldn't say I really have looked like I was dancing either. I actually dislike dancing (except for the silly stuff like the Hokey Pokey) so I really didn't want to do freestyle at the start. But I figure everyone is pretty much just watching Risa so I worry less about what I'm doing. As long as we both look like we're having fun, I suppose that's all that matters.
