It was a long time ago when I did flyball with Pooch but IIRC they had him use mini tennis balls, because he tended to fumble the full size ones out of the box.
With his small size, speed and toy obsession he would have been a great flyball dog. Unfortunately we found out he had hip dysplasia and had to stop after taking some classes, so he never did get to compete.
He was so ball crazy, he would play with a ball by himself for hours by tossing it across the room himself with his paws and mouth, and chasing it down. If the ball got caught behind something and he could not get to it, he would get as close as possible and then stare and bark/whine at it nonstop. Terrier tenacity, not always a good thing- he would not give up.
