Not with a German shepherd, but I compete in freestyle with my dog.
I bet, judging by your location, you're taking classes at Tails U Win? I used to go up there to practice with the Top Hats 'n' Tails WCFO Club when we lived in Connecticut.

Yes....I just started freestyle at Tails U Win. I wonder why there aren't more GSDs in this. Went to one class and Stella has figured out how to spin in both directions already. She knows how to roll too. None of this is very smooth but I am still amazed at how fast she picks this up. Next week we are going to learn weaving I think. It seems like a great way to get good focus and attention while having fun. Don't know if we will ever get to competing but we will sure have fun learning.

There probably aren't a lot of GSDs involved because, overall, there aren't a lot of dog/human TEAMS involved. It's a pretty new, and pretty small, sport at the moment. We've been active in it for about 5 years (demos and competitions) and I don't know why it hasn't caught on more. It is so much FUN for both human and dog.

I did a little freestyle training with my previous dog, my Golden, Ginger, but I never competed because I was too nervous to try, I am horrible at coordination. I didn't do any with my Shepherd but I would like to try with my next dog. I went to a few seminars and things but there weren't any classes in my area.

Nikon has a few trick routines/sequences we do for kids but I can't bring myself to do costumes and music.

Our class ended due to lack of interest. Oh well. Stella was great at learning new tricks quickly but didn't seem very enthused during class. I still work on some of the tricks at home just because they are fun and they amaze the grandkids! I don't think I would have gotten into competition. I just thought it would be fun. (and it was) So, instead we are now doing nose work....

I have the book Dancing with Your Dog and it has some great info for training moves.
I'm also interested in trying out bridge and target/body target training, I can see it being really useful for freestyle and other things too. |
