Well after our trip to SC and Milla showing her waterdog skills I am thinking of trying a little dock diving with her. Does anyone know of any places around Central Illinois that has this option?

Of course that's only going to get you an event to trial in. I read the question as "how do I find a place to train?" For that- I don't think any of the venues have a training facility search utility, and google (or your search engine of choice) would be your best bet.

I think there are clubs that train but it's few and far between. We actually have one in west Michigan but I've never trained with them since they use one of those fancy dog parks that requires a million vaccinations.

For those that do dock diving. I have a lake with a dock that I take her to and that is how I found out that she loved it. Is it really THAT much different in the competitions?

Yes, lol. Can't tell you how many dogs jump into lakes and refuse their first competition. That's how mine were, neither jumped into the pool their first time and it took some additional practice.

Like this?
haha... yes, unfortunately it is that much different. I also thought that if I took my dog to a lake/river with a dock and practiced, that she'd be a superstar in competition. Yeah right. We got up on the real dock- she took off- and at the last second hit the brakes hard. It took a lot of work to get her to jump off the first time. They say it's the clear water that gets them (as opposed to more opaque water in a lake/river). And then there's also the difference between jumping inside vs outside...

And most regular docks are not nearly as high off the water.
This is kind of a stretch but I was a gymnast and if you're really good (I'm not) and compete at huge competitions, the equipment is on raised "podiums". They call the practice sessions before the meet "podium training" and it's not just for warm-ups but because if you're new to competing at that level, you've never competed on equipment raised another 4' off the ground. It's the same, but not... I suppose it could feel the same for a dog. They are jumping from a platform, not a dock. The pool is above ground and the platform and exit ramp are way above their heads. |
