Default Lure coursing is a blast!!!

Helki got to try lure coursing for the first time this weekend and she LOVED it!

On the first day, we took her over toward the start line so she could watch what was going on. The minute the bag started to move, Helki's eyes were locked on and her whole body started to quiver with excitement. We watched a few runs and she kept getting more and more amped. When it came time to run, Doug took her to the start and as the judge said "Tally-ho" she was off like a rocket! She had a blast racing around the course after the lure. As soon as the bag stopped at the end, she tackled it and kept biting it like, "C'mon! Keep going!"

On the second day, Helki was ready to go as soon as she heard the whir of the engine. She pulled Doug up to the line, barking and whining, ready to run. She blasted around the course, determined to catch the lure.

We had a good laugh at the end of each run. Helki's eyes were dilated like a coke fiend and she desperately wanted to chase the lure again. I think we may have a lure coursing addict on our hands!!!

What a fun event!

Here's a video of the second day:

What's the purpose of this other than for fun and exercise? Nothing wrong with that. Are they timed and is it competitive?

It's not exactly close but it's not too far...
Fido's Festival USAŽ 2011 (scroll down to Lure for a Cure)

We'll be there all weekend and I really think Kaiser will love it.

We were at an agility trial this weekend and they just happened to have lure coursing at the other end of the park. We decided to try it out for fun and Helki loved it!

Coursing Ability Tests aren't timed and they are pass/fail, so they are non-competitive. Here's a link with some additional info:

Maybe this is a silly question, but...

I have trained Saber not to chase squirrels because 1) I don't want her chasing one in an outdoor OB trial, and 2) I don't want her killing stuff! Do you think if I let her try lure coursing it might backfire and make it harder for me to prevent her from chasing squirrels??

I personally don’t think so. Yes, the dog’s prey drive becomes activated, but the visual stimulus is very different.

I think context is also important. If I'm lazily strolling through a park with my dog on a Flexi, they are allowed to look, sniff, etc. If I am at an obedience trial in that same park and my cues and body language say "Get ready", that same dog should be attentive and focused even if squirrels are throwing parties in the trees.

For me, it's not about avoiding situations that activate drive or distract a dog, it's about channeling that drive and working through the distractions.
