Our rescue puts out a newsletter several times a year and I was asked to write an article about different dog sports that you can do with your rescue (or non rescue) GSD.
I would like to include: Agility K9 Nose Work Rally-O Treiball Freestyle Flyball Are there any others? Also, for those with experience in any of the above, what are some of the things I should absolutely mention? I'd like to have a short paragraph describing each sport and the kind of dog that would be good for it. For example, K9 Nose Work is a good low impact sport and also good for reactive dogs since dogs are crated when not working. Flyball would be good for a dog with high ball drive etc.

There's Schutzhund. A dog does not have to be registered, or pure bred, for Schutzhund.
Dock Diving is becoming more popular, though probably not widely available yet. Tracking - low impact, good for reactive dogs as one dog is worked at a time, something the owner and dog can do on their own without fancy equipment or facilities, and an excellent brain workout!

Thanks!
I will probably mention a thing or two about Schutzhund and S&R but I want to hit on some of the lesser known sports. It will be more geared to the average pet owner.

Because Schutzhund isn't lesser known?
![]() But I get what you are saying - most people are just looking for something fun to do with their dogs rather than a lifestyle. ![]() But that actually gave me an idea for a thread . . .

Does Sasha dropping tennis balls on the treadmill while I am running and catching them on the other side count as Freestyle?

Herding is what we're into- and it can be done by many breeds and sizes. I'm in TX and it's becoming more and more popular with clubs and training facilities popping up. It uses their natural abilities and is physically and mentally challenging, plus strengthens teamwork.
