I was curious if anyone has tried Dock jumping with their GSD. I am taking Roscoe today with my trainer to a Dock. He loves chasing his frisbee into the ocean and swimming...on land he loves Jumping hurdles and jumping when the frisbee is thrown..so I am going to give it a whirl off the dock.
If he likes it they a club here locally I am going to join. I am going today at 2pm with trainer..will post later on how he did with pics Welcome to - DockDogs.com |

Yes! Out here we have Splash Dogs. I tried it once with Dena & Keefer, we just did practice runs since neither had ever jumped off a dock before. For a small fee they let you have unlimited practice jumps before and between competition rounds.
We got Dena to go into the pool from the exit ramp, but she wouldn't go in off the dock. Keef slid off the dock head first a couple of times, went completely underwater and then popped back up to the surface like a cork - it was hilarious! He'd still rather go into water off a beach than jump in, but Halo will jump into the bay off rocks, so I really want to try it with her. There's an event coming up next month that I'm hoping to go to. Our opportunities to jump off a dock are limited around here. You may find that jumping into a pool is different for Roscoe because the water is clear, and jumping into water is also different than swimming in the ocean. Keefer is a very strong swimmer and has no problem going out into the waves and then riding them back into shore (yes, he bodysurfs, lol!) and I can't keep him out of any body of water he spies, but I'm not sure I'll ever make him a dock diver. Here's Keef "diving" - no style points for you! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Having a conversation about giving it another go. Keefer declined. ![]()

I give Keef a perfect 10 for style...awsome pics totally underwater.
Roscoe had a blast today..was bummed no dock though. But he he had a blast swimming and my trainer had another person there and their dog, plus the trainer's dog and Roscoe...he had a blast. Was head to toe in mud..LOL he didn't care..lol was righ in the house and right for the tub. Docks are not easy to find...I have one at my house but the water is too shallow and no easy way to get out...plus it's on salt water so the sea wall and pillons are covered with barnacles. If anyone around the Ocean city MD Rehobeth DE area knows of a good dock that allows dogs that would be awsome. I am in South Bethany. |

Debbie, those are hilarious pics of Keefer! the first couple look like he just went "kerplunk" and the last one looks like he's saying "nahhhh YOU go get it" LOL toooo funny..
This is the dog Masi practices off of,,we haven't competed yet, there arent that many competitions around here.. This dock is at the mouth of the CT River, so at high tide it's perfect ) (masi is the black blurp swimming in)

It can be a challenge when you don't get much chance to practice. There you are trying to talk your dog into making the leap in front of the crowd.
My sunglasses went in the drink before Enno did, but he eventually caught on. ![]() It is loads of fun! |

Samba - that is a brilliant photo!
Debbie - Keefer looks so hilarious in the second pic! Is this something you can start at any age? Molly is 8 months old and loves the ocean.

Diane, I think we got him to go in off the dock 3 times before he decided he was done, and each time it was pretty much the same, he just sorta fell in head first, lol!
I held down the shutter and got a couple of great sequences of pictures with him going underwater and bobbing back up. Finally, he seemed to notice that he had an audience and he laid there on the dock looking around and posing for his fans. It would have been a lot more embarrassing except that everyone was clapping and cheering him on so it ended up being a lot of fun even though we weren't so successful. The event was a the fairgrounds during a Kid Fair, so there were kids everywhere, from babies in strollers to toddlers to the pre-teens doing tumbling and gymnastics next to the pool and some bleachers where families where watching the dogs dive. I was across the pool trying to encourage him to jump in and swim towards me, but one time he decided "screw that", and turned around and ran the other direction, back down the stairs, and around the pool to me, yikes! Bianca, I think Splash Dogs require that they be over 6 months old to enter, so Molly should be fine. Prepare to get wet though! Samba, great picture of Enno - he's actually JUMPING!

I never did any formal events but my first female loved jumping off the dock into the water. There is a lake in Columbia MD that has a wall off the side of the lake about 8-10 feet above the water. The first time her ball went in there (with a little help from me) she had to think about it for a second or two and then there was no stopping her. She loved jumping off the wall when we went to the lake. Good times.
