So I hike with Dozer ALOT and I use a backpack but not for every hike, just the long ones usually. I hiked up Mt Cardigan yesterday with him and I made a few observations which interested me.
I had a backpack on him with a bunch of stuff, it weighed about 15lbs I am guessing so it is not heavy at all for him (he weighs 94lbs). I never have him on a leash when we hike (unless its a rule). When I hike without the backpack he runs ahead and sniff everywhere, runs back and he is all over the place BUT yesterday I noticed that when he had his backpack on he walks either right next to me or right behind me like a pack mule LOL. I thought it was interesting since I never taught him to do that when he has a backpack on. So I decided to experiment, I would take it off and I would carry it and he would run around and explore but I would put it back on and he would stick by me. Do you think he knows that the is his job to carry that backpack and he is taking it very seriously? LOL. He means business with that pack on. I think it makes him feel important... Here is a pic of him this winter with his pack on: ![]() This is proof he is capable of running with it on (I had to throw a stick to get him to go ahead)

I think you are pretty dead on with this. He's care free and allowed to do what he wants and explore on a hike. When you put a pack on the dog they now have a job so more likely he is simply going into work mode rather then free run play mode.

The funny thing is that I never trained him to do this, he just does it automatically. I think its great, I put stuff I need easy access to in his pack so I don't have to remove mine, LOL.

My dog does the same thing! Except he usually stays right in front of me, will stop if he gets more than 20 ft ahead and wait on the side of the trail - will only run if I FORCE him to. LOL, it's neat to see another dog respond the same way.

My female we had would do the same, you could see her whole attitude change when the pack went on.
