So I have been looking for a way to get Dozer a lot of exercise plus a job. Now that he is a year old I am going to try dog scootering. It looks really fun and would be perfect for me. Plus I love the scooter instead of my bike b/c I can go slower if I want to bring the little ones and I feel like I have more control. I like being able to put my feet down. I can even attach my Cairn with Dozer as long as I keep it at a slow trot, my Scooter (my Cairn) would LOVE that, he loves to run. I do not take him with me when I bike b/c I feel like I do not have enough control and I am afraid of him going under the wheels.
I am planning on skijoring this winter so this would be great to start and teach him with. Has anyone tried this? Any ideas on how to teach him to pull? I am afraid that since I try so hard to teach him NOT to pull that this will ruin that. I am thinking that he will associate the pulling harnes and commands with pulling. I am just not sure he will actually pull, he will probably run and keep looking back at me. This is a good website I found. http://dogscooter.com/

I used to bike with my dogs, but I never did it with them pulling the bike. I used an attachment that allows them to safely run next to the bike (K9 Cruiser.) I looked into scootering and I wanted to try it, but I couldn't afford those dog scooters they sell and the one I had was broken so I never really got into it.

We have a scooter and used to use it a lot with Grace when she was younger. We trained her by having my husband ride his bike in front of her while I rode the scooter. She was so focused on him that it was easy to get her to ignore everything else. We also found she was able to understand the difference between pulling with her harness on and using the scooter versus not pulling when she was wearing a collar and leash for walks.
I see you've found dogscooter.com, and there is a lot of info about training your dog, the different commands etc. And at one point there was even a dog scootering yahoo group - which may still exist. Scootering is a blast - have fun! |
