Dozer gets hot! Does this work?

I hike a lot with my Cairn and I am planning on bringing Dozer as well. Well I took him today and he is black and his back was hot. We were in shade most of time but I notice how hot his fur gets when in the sun, even briefly. Obviously the dark fur attracts the sun.

Has anyone used one of these? I am not sure how it works, maybe reflects the sun but you would think the jacket would make him hot. I never dress up my dogs (not even my little Cairns) but I feel bad he gets so hot.

I have this cool coat and have used it on my GSD and Husky at agility trials:

It can be used wet or dry. I would usually soak it first and then put it on during runs at trials. I do believe it kept them cooler. It's made from the same material that is used for coolers for horses.

If it is what I am thinking of, it does get heavy when it is wet (and I think it needs to be soaked to work). I've got cool collars & cool pads that work that way. They worked great in Wyoming when we traveled. Here, drying them out after use is a bit of a challenge. But, yes, they work.

But as you are in NH you may not need this at all. I used my stuff when we traveled in summer in pretty hot, dry areas.

It gets to about 90 on an average summer day and has been over 100, the killer is the humidity though and I thinmk it is the hot sun beating on his back that makes him hot. He doesn't act hot but his back feels really hot when i touch it.

Its simple evaporative cooling, it should work like a charm. It specifically says to wet it and wring it out, so weight is not an issue.

Another thing that works is to just wet your dogs head and back, or whole body. When its really hot out I will spray the hose on my dog (He loves it, he bites and it and gets all in it) He gets wet, not soaked, and runs around and plays. Keeps him a little bit cooler.

They seem to work so long as you keep wetting it. Otherwise they just heat up.

I bring water along and just wet my dog as needed top and bottom. Cheap and easy.
