Wayne,
Not sure if you got any replies but I know there's a SDA trial coming up not to far from us in the next couple months. I plan to go and video as much as I can.

I did find a short video of family obedience on you tube. Not the best performance by the dog (ending with it departing the area on the recall). I'm entered in Premier so it answered a couple questions. I did note the honor dog was down for the entire 1st obedience section. The link is :

I think those turns are wrong too.
I'm working on putting together the entire routine for Kenya a few times. We haven't competed it yet, but I have seen it done many times at UKC/Dog Sport trials. Maybe I will video tape it for critique. The only thing I can't do on my own is the group.

You can choose the type about turn and finish you do, but it must be the same the entire routine, otherwise you run into point deductions. The about turns shown were perfectly legal. The judge will deduct based on the execution (or lack thereof) of the chosen about turn and finish.
Of course the honor dog was down the whole time - that's me with Umsa . The honor dog needs to stay down for the entire first portion (until the practical exercises), however, partial points are allowed if the dog sits or stands a bit early. If the dog starts to sit or stand before a certain point in the other dog's routine, all points are gone for that exercise.Let me know if you have other questions! Christine

Ah, OK I see what you mean about the turns. I'm still stuck in Rally mode, so to me that turn looked like the "about U turn" which basically means a left 180 that's NOT a "flip"/pivot or the turn around the handler's back (in Rally there are five different 180 turns, even more if you count the ones that have sits before or after the turn/pivot). Is the turn in the vid a poorly executed "flip" style turn?

Now add YouTube to the mix. I prefer NOT to critique YouTube videos. I really respect everyone that trains their dog and enters a trial - I personally don't think it's fair to dissect someone's performance on the internet (NOT that this is what you are asking me to do, it's just a general policy that I have). In the perfect world that we all train for, all about turns should be tight and "crisp", regardless of the type. The dog shouldn't lag or look distracted. Hope that helps!! Christine

Gotcha!
Lord only knows how many of my club's training vids we've watched, wrinkled our faces, and trashed!
