Thunder (Tundie) my longcoat German Shepherd escaped from the house as the dog walker entered on Monday December 14th. He ran off along Frying Pan Road in Herndon but has also been sighted near the Loudoun County border by the Centennial Golf Course. He is wearing a choke collar and brown leather collar with tags. The name on the tag is Chewy, but he responds best to Tundie. He is "wolf colored" (predominantly black with cream markings,) with a solid black face, stands 30 inches high, weighs 105 pounds, and can easily be taken for a Shiloh Shepherd. He is new to the Herndon area and is very panicked, very lost, and by now very hungry. Tundie is very gentle and not at all aggressive but he will be very wary of strangers. He likes going for rides so you may be able to coax him into an open car by tossing a treat inside and saying "come on Tundie, let's go for a ride," and you may be able to approach him with another dog. Please call your county Animal Control if he runs so they can search for him. And please, please call me immediately if you see him so I can come to get him. My home phone is 703-793-0923; work is 703-446-1666, and cell is 703-568-5879. Tundie is not AKC registered and is only valuable to those who love him. $500 Reward. kshurwitz@fcps.edu<mailto:kshurwitz@fcps.edu>
Fingers are crossed that he's caught before I get out there, but my plan is to join in the search at 4:45 with Tara. I'm off work tomorrow so I can help any time in the morning also, if needed.
I spoke to Sue this evening. She's camped out again hoping Tundie gets lured into the trap. Whenever people get close enough to call him, he runs off.
She said that the next thing they are trying to do is find a dog in heat. Perhaps the smell will bring Tundie closer. She said a towel with urine on it from a dog in heat would be helpful. But, that is so hard to find since most females are spayed in this area. If anyone knows of any or has any ideas, please contact Sue.
John looked for him for a couple of hours yesterday without any success.
I think he plans on going back again this afternoon.
He also said that food was being put out at other places than the trap. That will work against the trap being effective. His only food source should be on a trail leading up to, and then inside of the trap. We have used to trap to capture a number of lost dogs over the years and this is vital to success.
Also, more flyers need to be posted - the area needs to be completely blanketed with flyers in English and Spanish. It is hard for me to get there before dark since I have to work all day and this is our crunch time at work for year end programming.
Kristin, thanks for the craigslist idea. I passed that along to Sue.
Lea, that's a really good point about the food stations. I had not thought of that before.
I'm stuck at work all day also. I'm going to try and get out tomorrow to put up more flyers tomorrow. I saw a flyer in plastic when I was putting them up last week. I need to find those plastic coverings so they don't get ruined in the rain. I'll try Staples.
I have emailed a breeder I know to see if one of hers might be in heat, and I also checked with my vet.
There is a company called Synbiotics that supposedly sells a product called 'Eau' De Estrus', but I couldn't find much info on their website.
When Sandy can dig out of her driveway (she got tons of snow up there and has medical issues, which limit how much she can shovel) she will be mailing Eli's pee (Thunder's best buddy) and a couple of her females pee. She is also sending t-shirts with her scent on them and towels with her packs scent on them.
I have an audio file (saved in voice mail) of Sandy calling him that I am trying to download and throw on CDs, so the searchers can blast it from their stereos.
Right now, I have to call Sandy back and tell her to not use up the whole voice mail time. Cox Communications said the file is too large to listen to or download from their voice mail, so I need to shorten the time.
I'll do that and just keep loading the copies onto the CD.
Tundie was seen this morning around 10 am in Sterling. Below is an email from Sue. Also, here is a link to the blog: Find Thunder Blog
--------
We had a confirmed sighting this morning up behind the bowling alley on Dranesville & Woodson Roads in Sterling. It seems far off his usual path but it is at the very end of Sugarland Run Valley Stream Park -- if he followed the stream bed it would take him right there. The people who saw him are neighbors who know him -- they are up in that area visiting their son. Said he was trotting along Rabbit Run heading west but the street circles back around toward Church Street and Sterling Blvd areas where he has been seen before. They said he looked strong and in good shape. We are going to drop flyers in both English and Spanish off at the bowling alley when/if it opens later today.
I am hoping the next sighting comes from back at the Elden/Herndon Parkway/Carlisle area that he seemed to be making home base over the past week.
About and hour ago he was right behind my house running around the track at Sully Elementary School. I actuall SAW him! He ran when I stopped walking toward him. His owner and her boyfriend are over at the school right now. His tracks are all over the place up around the school.
I hope they can catch him. I was just out putting up flyers. I'm tied up until 5. I'll head out there around then. I had a dream last night that he was caught. Fingers crossed that it comes true.
I spoke to Sue. Some of the neighbors are putting the scent pads in their yards to lure Tundie tonight. I went and put up some flyers in that area this evening. I ran out of English ones. So, some are only in Spanish. But, I think people can figure out what they mean from a picture and a phone number.
When I was putting up flyers earlier in the day in Herndon, I had two people ask me if Tundie was still missing. So, it sounds like folks are aware of him.
What has Tundie been up to recently? Wouldn't it be much nicer in a cozy home with a nice dinner and Christmas treats?
It is just beyond me why they get into these escapades.
I did not hear anything yesterday. There is a family that lives on his latest travel path that is leaving their fence open and putting food out in hopes of luring him into their yard.
The latest blog report doesn't sound good. Tundie was spotted in Sterling yesterday morning, but he was wet. It's so cold outside. That's not a good combination. I hope he gets tired and stays still long enough to be tracked down.
I hope they find him really soon too. Poor Tundie.
