The following was on the K9 Amber Alert list this morning:
*** PERMISSION GIVEN TO CROSSPOST (12 p.m.) EAST FREEDOM - The search for a Marine's dog ended successfully today in Freedom Township. Apollo, a German shepherd, was caught about 10 a.m. in one of the humane dog traps set out for him, Trooper Jeff Petucci of the Hollidaysburg state police barracks said. Apollo had been missing for a week, after his master suffered injuries in an Interstate 99 crash. Sgt. Hamilton Taylor Woodruff, 23, of State College died Tuesday. The dog was spotted several times late last week but searchers were unable to catch him until today. *** |

Since it sounds like his owner was killed, is this dog safe now that he has been captured?

If I remember the story correctly, it was his family that was trying to find the dog and they were planning on keeping him. So glad he was found safe!

I'm so glad that this poor dog was found and glad to hear that the owner's family is going to take care of him.

STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Howard Woodruff told WTAJ News Monday, everything has come full circle now that Apollo is home and that life can now continue. Hamilton Woodruff wanted a tough dog to go along with his Marine Sergeant image. After a week in the woods, Apollo has earned his stripes. At 6:45 last week, the Woodruff Family got a much different phone call than the one they received Monday morning. “It was almost to the hour that we found out our son was in a very bad auto accident. in one way it's very sweet, it kind of dulls the pain of that memory,” Pastor Howard Woodruff said. Searchers found Apollo in a humane trap that had been set up in Blair County near the crash site. After a week in the woods he had a limp on one of his hind legs, and some bug bites. He also had a close encounter with a porcupine, but a local vet said he should be back to normal in a week or two. The Woodruff Family said this reunion would not have been possible without the help of hundreds of strangers. “What surprises me is the community that came out, especially a community 50 miles from here who didn't even know my son, didn't know the dog, didn't know us,” Pastor Woodruff said. Searchers, rescuers, and everyday people scoured the woods around the crash site for days. On Monday, those searchers found their dog, and gave him back to a family in need of a little good news. Hamilton Woodruff's mother said in the months to come, the family will pay forward the kindness Central Pennsylvania has shown them. “We are so grateful for everything everyone has done, and I don't know how we're going to do it, but somehow we are going to try very hard to make some thank yous known,” Dawn Woodruff said. After his ordeal, Apollo is still very friendly. The Woodruff's said it will take some time for him to get his energy back, but they are very excited to welcome him back home. |
