Hi everyone. What a great place. I'm currently without a k-9 friend, but hopefully, not for long.
A little story about our start with Lucy. My father in law bought Lucy from her second owner back in march of '06, when she was 1 1/2. When I met her I instantly fell in love and would walk her. He got her to keep deer off his grass, but Lucy wanted to explore the neighborhood. So he installed an underground electric fence. She immediately did not want to be anywhere near it.
So, while taking her out for a walk, as I watched her nervously walking across the fence, I told her I'd be her best friend.
It started just taking her for the weekend. We would hike for days, kayak & bike. The weekends got longer,Thursday-Monday. Finally,September of '06, my father in law gave Lucy to us for a wedding gift!
When my wife was pregnant in '08, lots of folks worried about the baby with Lucy. Lucy was great from day one! You would have to get through her to get to the baby. She was such a special dog, that we have so many good memories with. We took her everywhere, minus a few long days at work. Made all kinds of worthwhile sacrifices for her, as she did for us, also. We sadly lost her in August at 12 1/2 years old.
We are ready to take on the commitment of having another and I can't wait! Maybe even 2 this time. Lol.

Awesome story!!! I'm sorry for your loss. A GSD is a special K9. I know the need for one. Life just isn't right without a German Shepherd as a friend. Good luck in finding you new friend(s)!!
Thanks shooter. I knew very little about GS when we met and now I feel they are Top Dog. She was so incredibly loyal. She was a perfect dog to us. I miss how she would hoot and holler. She would get so excited, she'd literally scream. It was a bit embarrassing for us at times but it never bothered our son. He loved her to pieces. In fact he was always envious she was "my dog".
We felt extremely lucky to be with her for so many good years. She did great all the way up to the last couple days. I was so humbled by the way she held together. When she turn 12 last January, people still thought she was a young dog. She didn't run like she use to along the bike. I bought a trailer years ago for long rides with her, so she rode in it more often towards the end. Wish I could post a pic. She was something else.

So sorry about Lucy. She sounds like she was an awesome dog. But seriously, only do one puppy at a time! The time, training and work of one puppy when you have a job and a family will be difficult enough. It'll be fun, but you don't want two at one time. Enjoy one and then in a few years get the next one.
So sorry about Lucy. She sounds like a wonderful dog. I hope you are able to post pics of her one day soon. I'd love to see her!
I agree about waiting for a year or two before getting a second pup. Bond with and train the first puppy before getting the second... it will leave you something to look forward to. I always like to have two dogs, but I waited until Asher was almost two before adding the second puppy. I love bringing up puppies, but with a family and a full time job, I think it would have been overwhelming to have two puppies at once.
Thanks for the advice. I do agree with you two. I had a knucklehead moment, there. If I could, I would, though. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this wonderful site. It's really nice to know you guys are here.
Lucy looked like such a great and beautiful girl. Sorry for the loss. They really are great family dogs. I also have to say life is not the same without a German Shepherd in it.
