My name is Ray. I'm an active duty military member stationed in Germany, and I've just acquired a 2 year old German Shepherd. Long story short, the previous owner did nothing to train or socialize the dog, then decided to give her away. Since I had been wanting a dog for a while, not necessarily a Shepherd, but something along these lines, I decided to take her. I've had her for a week and a half and have already seen some behavioral improvements. I'm still wary of social situations because she gets too excited, and being what she is, scares most people and dogs off before she can meet them. She will be attending behavioral classes and S&R classes immediately.
Welcome to the forums. Wow you have a gorgeous little girl and I hope the training helps socialize her. Thank you for your service and hope all is well in Germany.
Welcome to the forum! She is beautiful and you have so many paths you can walk with her on in Germany! Do you live on the economy? You can literally walk from one village to another. Once you have her where you feel safe taking her out, look for volksmarches to go with her on!
Yes, there are tons of paths here. I do live on the economy, about 25 minutes from the facility I'm stationed at. So my village is rather rural, comparatively speaking. There are tons of old trails and tractor paths where I live. So I usually get a 2 mile run with her in the morning and then a 3-4 mile hike in the evenings or play time at the local Shutzhunde dog park.
I do not feel comfortable at this point taking her around other dogs. I have a good friend who owns a Cane Corso, and I will be meeting him on trails on the weekends so she can start getting use to being around another dog and person. Hopefully with that, and the classes she will start simmering down. Right now, she is so bad that she will choke herself out on her collar when someone comes near. She wants to play, but she doesn't know how to interact at this point.
Her previous owner did NOTHING to socialize her and it definitely shows by the way she loses it when she gets around another person and/or dog.
I miss the paths in Germany! We were stationed in Bad Kissingen and then in Fulda. My son and daughter-in-law were stationed at Ramstein. I encouraged them to live on the economy and they did. You can walk, hike or run as far as you want. Make sure your friend's Cane Corso isn't dog aggressive. The worst thing for her is another dog to go after her. You want to make sure she meets dogs that are dog friendly with her and all experiences are positive.
