Default New here from Texas!

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forums, I currently live in Texas with my husband, our daughter, our rescued greyhound mix and our 3 bunnies. We are currently waiting for our German shepherd pup to be ready to pick up. She is currently 7 weeks old but I was wondering if it is normal for a breeder to keep pups until they are 12 weeks. This is when we were told our pup will be ready for pick up.

Hello and welcome! Picking him up at 12 weeks sounds a bit odd to me. Is the breeder working with the pups in socialisation and exposing them to new places etc...? Otherwise you'll be getting a late start of it.

Welcome from Denton! And I second that 12 weeks sounds very late. I would ask what kind of socialization is taking place. Sounds completely unnecessary for them to hold the pups that late unless they have some special program they're putting them through.

Sorry for the late response, I hadn't noticed the replies. The breeder told me they work on early socialization and beginner obedience (sit, down, stay, come and heel). She will have her third puppy shot the day we pick her up as well as being dewormed. And she will come with a puppy package (small bag of food (blue buffalo puppy) a couple of toys, a baby blanket). She will have a 2 year health guarantee as well. I have been out to the breeders home and it is clean, well organized. I got to meet both parents when I went and have seen paperwork for their health testing. The breeder picked our pup for us based on what we were looking for and I have gotten to go see her a few times, we are really pleased with her. Everything seems great minus the fact that she won't be coming home until she is 12 weeks old. That is the only thing is felt was odd.

Ok then, I think that would check out for me! They're holding the pup a bit longer than I would personally want my pup held, but it sounds like they are working with it, doing some obedience and such. So it's not like the pup is just sitting around the house. I think it'll be just fine. Just make sure you jump right on top of socialization and building your relationship with the pup once it gets home. Sounds like they're doing a lot of great things, the only downside is you have less time to work on your own socialization after the pup gets home.

I got one of my pups at 12 weeks. At that point, HE knew he wanted to go with me..followed me everywhere and every time I stopped, he plopped down under my skirt and played with my shoe. Even though I had planned to get a female, he won me over. He was the best dog I've ever had and was very in tune with me. If it's a good dog, it's a good dog...whether it's 7 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, or 2 years.
