Hello from small town IL

I received my first GSD as a milestone birthday present. Our boy's name is Moses and although he had a rough first few months (he is a "repossessed" dog), I am happy to say that he is doing great. Can someone enlighten me as to why he whines when he cannot see me? He is crated while I am at work and all is fine. However, when I come home and leave his view, the whining starts. Why? How do I stop this behavior? Thanks!

He is thinking hey your here why am I not with you.? Don't worry as he gets older he probably won't whine anymore because he'll be to busy trying to trip you. By that I mean everywhere you go so will he and that includes the bathroom if you don't move fast enough and shut the door before he starts reading your mind and getting there first:)

How old is he?

haha! My girl does the same thing! They are called velcro dogs! It got better as she got older. Training her for her CGC test helped Athena. I place her in sit/stay and walked out of the room, @ first she cried. I would walk back in give the quiet command and leave again. I started with 1 minute and worked up to 45 minutes. Over time they will figure out you always come back and relax.

Thanks for the advise. Moses is just a year old; he has been with us since the end of 2013. He has been under my feet since the day he arrived but the whining started a couple of weeks ago. We cannot recall a defining event that could have caused it.

Is he whining while your home and he is in the crate? Or just if you leave thd room and he is out and about ?

He whines anytime I am out of his sight! Crate or no crate...if he is napping and wakes up and I am in a different room - he whines until he finds me.

My dog is the same way, I leave her with my parents sometimes and she's a crying mess. I hear her before I make it off the steps. She gets her mind on something else fairly quickly they tell me. My Australian Shepherd on the other hand is a whole other level of clingy. When she is left with my parents she become lethargic, depressed, losses appetite. I once had to pick her up from the vet a little early because the doctor became a little sad that she was so visibly sad lol. Your issue may be just a tad due to the dog being a "repossessed" dog. It may feel a little uneasy when you disappear that you may not come back. Rest assure though that these things are fairly normal anyways. Even take it as a positive a little bit the dog obviously really cares about you. My GSD is beginning to hit the independent phase where she thinks she needs no one. I sometimes miss her missing me now.
