Hi y'all, I am new owner of a GSD, who is 4 months old, got him at 8 week old. He is a Service Dog In Training, a gift from a breeder in Texas. Is great with commands, verbal & hand, however, he is jumping up & biting? Any advice? I am heart broken he is doing this. I waited 3 years for him. Thank you.
Welcome, he is very cute! I'm pretty new to the site but not new to the breed.
He is a GSD puppy. They all go through this phase. If he jumps at you move away and ignore, if he nips at you replace you with a toy he can chew. Be persistent and consistent. He will get it.
Totally normal. infact you should be worried if he didn't do those things. You can yell ouch when he bites and disengage. Don't try and discipline or be the dominant. He just needs to learn that his bite hurts, then you can proceed with "no bite". Jumping, use the palm of your hand and push away with "off" command. A gentle knee to the stomach to hush him back can work too. Do this with helpers too so they understand that means all people, not just you.
Greetings back at ya from Texas. I will be vacationing in Boston in a few weeks, maybe we'll pass in the park. Sounds like you have a perfectly normal, healthy landshark to me.
Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on your new baby! Take heart--my boy is 18 weeks old tomorrow and I have no teeth marks on hands or arms. I could not pet him until about two weeks ago. Now he is so affectionate and bonded. There is so much good info on this forum. It has made a huge difference in feeling competent and confident with my boy. I have had wonderful, devoted dogs over the years, but a GSD takes it to a whole different level!!! More is required from me
Beautiful pup! Don't be heartbroken- it's normal behavior. Remember that he's just a baby and will be for quite some time. He'll get over it if you're consistent
