Default Just joined the forum and thought I would say hello

Hello all, new member and a new owner of the GSD breed. Just wanted to say hello and tell you a bit about my 10 month old GSD Mason. We picked him up 2 days ago and have him settling in. Training has already began and toilet training is getting better.

He is very playful and my partner and I have been teaching him that we are the alphas out of the pack but I am a bit worried that my daughter isn't doing as good. Any tips as to how we can give her the advantage over mason?

Also he is very aggressive towards our cats,as soon as he sees them he starts to growl and bark any tips as to how we can get him to settle around them?

Regards Tom

Hey Tom!!! Welcome to the forum! Congrats on the new GSD!

Not everyone will peek into the introductions thread. You might get better results posting a new thread in the training section. Many great folks here that can give you stellar advice.

Oh and btw - we love pictures here! Can't wait to see your new GSD!!!

Hellllpppp (14 wk old puppy keeps chasing the cats)

Welcome to the forum! There are a lot of good tips regarding GSDs and cats. We teach leave the kitty command using treats while looking away from the cat (see above link). At least you got to skip the land shark phase!

Welcome! Don't worry about the alpha thing now, just give your dog some time to settle in. If he is playful work with that to built trust and love, give lots of praise to good behavior. The cats may take a while, hopefully they will stand their ground. For now you can redirect your dog away from the cats, maybe a tab leash will help, calm him down, rub his chest, when he's calm and non reactive try giving a treat.

I would not worry about being alpha with him. Just work on building a good working relationship between him and everyone in the family. I always find this video pretty funny, but it does a good job of showing the difference between "alpha" or "dominance" behaviors that don't translate effectively from human to dog vs. just having a good trusting relationship and clear rules between you and your dog. It's a fun watch

Hello! I just joined today as well, mostly in hopes to network and meet fellow owners. I have a 3 year old female, Lucy, who is a joy. Bullheaded as can be but I wouldn't change her for the world. I am hoping to find another breeder in the New England area, any imput or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello again all, thank you very much for replying to my thread. A lot of great info that you guys have shared with me just a question I was told that assuring alpha roles was important with older pups than a younger pup? I have been just doing general training like where his zone is and stuff like that ATM. Am I starting to early with training? And I will post a photo of him once I figure out how to post them. Thank you again.
