Hope Ryder Will Be a Keeper!

Hello all...from here in snowy southwestern Ontario, Canada.

We currently have accepted a trial time with a 5 year old Male German Shepherd to see if he fits into our lifestyle and we can meet his needs.

Ryder is from a rural location and we are living in a large town, so we are 3 days into trying to train him to walk on leash.

He weighs about 110 lb and I'm only 5' 1" and weigh about 115 lb so it is crucial that he learns to respect and obey! Any tips?

The other question I tried to find an answer to in the forums deals with his diet.
How do I find a suitable, reasonably priced dog food that reduces what now seems to me to be far too many stools. (3-4 a day!)

Lots of other questions but will just say "Hey!" for now :)

How wonderful of you to take Ryder in and offer him a good home.

As far as training, try leerburg.com for free tips to basic obedience. I good trainer would be your best bet.

For food...What is he eating now and how much?

Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor This is a good resource here in the States. I'm sure some of the brands are available in Canada. You might want to look into RAW diet as well. Much less poop on raw for sure.

Best of luck to you both. :)

Find a good trainer, lots of other Ontario members, they may have some suggestions. Look up NILIF, "nothing in life is free", quite a few helpful threads on it. You might check into dogfood advisor, it can help sort out your choices of kibble or you might want to look into going with a "raw" diet. I feed NV instinct and earthborne and haven't had issues with either including the amount of poop. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor I'm not sure what's available in your area, maybe Orijen or Acana ? and if you can find it, Honest Kitchen. Good luck with Ryder.

Has the dog been on a lead before.

What issue are you finding that you want remedied?

Tyler Muto has some good vids on controlling a dog through leash pressure and developing a place command.

Hi! I hope he is a keeper too! Thanks for trying him out. :)

Being a five year old dog that has never learnt to walk on leash properly is going to be a bit of a challenge for you. He might a quick study who lives to please and learn to walk at heel nicely, but until then, I would suggest a prong collar to make sure you have control and that he does not pull you into traffic:

They are also called Pinch Collars, and despite their appearance, they are not inhumane or cruel. Try one on you arm or leg, give it a good hard jerk - you won't even feel the individual prongs, but an all-over tightening effect as the pressure is distributed evenly through all the prongs. Dogs respond well to the prong, and it was a life-changer when after struggling for a full year with my adopted rescue (who I believe had been a tied dog), who just choked herself on a regular or choke collar, I decided to try a prong, and couldn't have made a wiser decision for what this dog needed.

A HUGE thank-you to all of you for responding!
I've been researching the suggested links and going over so much all day.

Ryder came with a 'prong collar' but I hadn't understood the proper use of it, so, watching a few clips from Tyler Muto was a fabulous resource; Thanks Castlemaid and Madlab!

Also learned much by reading up on dog nutrition. Thanks, Springbrz!

And yes; Jelpy; the avatar IS Ryder :) He's a handsome feller.

Bless you guys!
