Proud Owner of a GSD Mix

Hi all,

I'm new here. My name is Amanda and I am the proud owner of a 5 month old GSD mix named Zoe. Far as I can tell, she's a GSD with some Beagle and maybe either Min-Pin or Dobie in her. I also have a 9 year old Bichon Frise named Esme as well. I've always loved GSDs and even though my puppy isn't a purebred, I love her just the same. I tell people she's a German Beagleman or a baby direwolf, haha. I wanted to name her Nymeria but my little sister didn't like the name, so we picked Zoe.

I've been volunteering with a local Brooklyn, NY-based adoption event called Love Wanted Pet Adoptions since 2009 and that's how my family and I got Zoe. I jokingly texted my mother with a picture, she fell in love, thought she was adorable, and decided to take her home. All NSAL said regarding her breed was that Zoe was some sort of GSD mix. She's got the coloring and temperament, but has the Pinscher paws, Beagle nose, and the Beagle bay haha.

She's a wonderful dog though. My mother wasn't prepared for such a high energy dog, especially since Esme is pretty laid back and was never as nippy and mouthy as Zoe. Things are much better now though--Zoe's gotten a bit older and can go for walks and get all of her energy out. Plus, the two pups are getting along (Esme was annoyed when we brought Zoe home haha) much better now. It's really cute watching them romp in the park together. :)

We got Zoe a dog trainer too but I won't lie, I'm not too crazy about her. She was okay for learning the basics and some of what she taught was quite helpful but I felt she talked too much and didn't do as much hands-on work as I liked. She also got nasty with both my boyfriend and myself for no reason, to the point when demonstrating a new command that she told my boyfriend to tell me to "back off, b-----" when it was his turn to practice.

I was also very turned off when she got in my face and yelled at me when I merely said I wished my family members would help out with Esme just a little more so I could focus on Zoe. She basically acted as if I was an immature child who twisted my mother's arm to adopt a new dog and then didn't want to do the work for either of my dogs, which is ironic considering my mother even admitted that adopting a new puppy was all her idea.

Needless to say, after that debacle and after learning from local dog owners who don't like this trainer because she'll randomly go up to them at the park and start lecturing and getting nasty to them about how they've trained their dog, we wish we went with someone else but you live and you learn.

The good thing is Zoe is very smart and is learning her commands--I'm focusing on weaning her off of her treats and using praise at the moment. It's difficult, but we're making process. :)

Anyway, my apologies for the long winded post. I'm happy to meet everyone!

Welcome to the forum and we need pictures!

Sorry about the trainer but I've been thru a bunch too. Not all trainers are the same...

Thank you both for the warm welcome! My apologies for the late reply, but here's a few pictures of Zoe. She's got the GSD and Doberman coloring but a bit of the Beagle body. I can't wait to see what she looks like full-grown.

Maggie-I can't tell you how furious I was at the trainer. I honestly think I would've been better off training her myself, but my mother preferred hiring someone. Oh well, Zoe's getting better with her commands and that's all that matters. Plus, if anyone in my neighborhood wants to use said trainer at least I can warn people now so they can find someone better.

And now, for some Zoe pics!
