Dealing with my grief
1 Attachment(s)
Today is 1week since my 9 year old shepherd passed away. On May 13th he had surgery to remove a rupturing spleen, a sudden & shocking event. He was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma, & the prognosis was very poor, I was told 3-6 weeks. As you know this cancer is very aggressive & treatment options are few. Given the cost & potential quality of life issues involved with intravenous chemotherapy I went with an oral form along with some alternative medications. Rosco needed biweekly blood work.
We had a good run, 7.5 months, before he suffered collapse. No amount of acceptance and knowledge could prepare anyone for the end.
Rosco was not a pure shepherd, however several veterinarians told me he was likely at least 80% GSD, 20% chow. He was the kindest, gentlest, most intelligent dog I ever had the privilege to love. In spite of the fact that GSD are slightly more prone to what Rosco passed away from I honestly can't imagine having anything but a GSD. I am wetting my toes with information on getting another in late spring 2014.

Rosco was a gorgeous boy. I am so very sorry for your loss. Glad to hear you will be able to open your heart to a new love come spring. You won't be sorry.

Very sorry to hear, and I know your sadness. Just yesterday I had the task of that last ride to the Vet with out 11 y/o Lab Katy. She developed bone cancer over a year ago & was getting along on 3 legs for 9 months.

She was down to two legs the last few weeks, then other issues. She was as loyal & loving as they come. It was(and is) very difficult.

Keep some pictures around, of course you can still talk about him.

So sorry for both of you. It never fails to make my heart hurt so much for them when people lose their best friends :(

So sorry for your pain. This poem actually gave me some comfort when I lost my BFF (best furry friend) a year ago:
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...

I'm so sorry for your loss. You did right by Rosco, I'm sure he knew that.

I'm so glad you are willing to open your heart to another GSD, they are the most wonderful companions. I'm sure everyone here can help you find a great breeder when you feel ready to open your door to a new friend.

RIP handsome Rosco
